June 2017

Dear Parents,

Good literature gives your children the opportunity to explore new worlds. Please encourage your children to read over the summer and provide them with the opportunity to select books of interest. Encourage your children to discuss and share with you the books they are reading.

A list of suggested titles is provided for summer reading. There are many wonderful children’s books available and your town librarian will have many suggestions in addition to the list provided. Students must read at least three age appropriate chapter books. These books may be from the suggested list or simply based upon your child’s preference. So that students may share their love of reading with each other, we would like the children to create character trading cards. Each card is to follow the attached format about a character in a book your child has read. Students are expected to complete an index card (large index card size 5x7) for at least three books. We encourage them to try to read both fiction and non-fiction selections. Cards are due the first day of school in September.

Children are encouraged to practice addition and subtraction facts on IXL.com over the summer in order to maintain the accuracy and speed they have developed this year. You will find a list of skills attached that can be used as a guide. All students entering third grade are required to complete all schoolwork in cursive handwriting. Please have your children practice both math and cursive skills, for a few minutes daily, over the summer.

You will find the supply list for third grade attached, as well.

We look forward to teaching your children. Have a safe and very happy summer!!

Sincerely,

The Third Grade Teachers

My Favorite Character

Use this planning sheet to prepare your character trading cards by filling in the information for each side of the trading card. Since space on a trading card is small make sure to use only the most important facts.

Character’s Name: ______

Story Title: ______

DESCRPTION OF STORY:

Setting: Where does the story take place?

______

What does the character look like?

What is one word that would describe your character’s personality?

What is the character’s problem at the beginning of the story?

At the end of the story did your character’s problem get fixed why? Why not?

What did you like or dislike about this character?

After completing this draft sheet you are now ready to make your card. Please use large index cards and be sure to draw a picture of your character on the front of the card. Remember to use your imagination to make your card more valuable to trade with your classmates in September.
