Fun Run November 10th
Our PTO has an amazing event planned for us this week on November 10th. This is our second school-wide fundraiser to support our school. Pledge envelopes were sent home last week for your use. Students will participate in a fun, outdoor activity on campus. All students will receive a t-shirt and water bottle. Sponsors of the event include Michelle Ray Properties. Money raised for our school support the purchase of Montessori materials, field trips and special programs such as Urban Harvest.
Peace Education - Race
According a Teaching Tolerance survey, the 2016 Presidential campaign is: eliciting fear and anxiety among children of color, immigrants and Muslims; and emboldening students to mimic the words and tone of the campaign. At school we are actively speaking to children about kindness and understanding throughout the day and in classroom community meetings.
Many white parents are uncomfortable talking with their children directly about race. A 2007studyin the Journal of Marriage and Family found that nonwhite parents are about three times more likely to discuss race than white parents. Parents many times believe that not mentioning it will show our children that it doesn’t matter.
When we don’t talk about race, our children continue to think about it and what they think is that itmatters too much to talk about. Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman wrote about this gap between what parents think we’re teaching, and what children are learning, in their “NurtureShock” column forNewsweekin 2009. It’s the children whose parents do directly address race (directly means far more than vaguely declaring everyone to be equal) who are less likely to make assumptions about people based on the color of our skin.
STRATEGIES FOR PARENTS
1. Have open and honest conversations with your children about race and the gifts of diversity.
2.Help children understand that there are many perspectives and listening to each other is key
3. Be a role model for social justice in your daily life
4. Talk to your children about the history of racial inequity and injustice in our country and world
5. Listen to your children and discuss the questions they have thoroughly. It may be easier and more comfortable to quickly answer “It doesn’t matter” or “We’re all the same” but children have deeper questions. Spend time with your children and discuss their concerns. A few more minutes makes a difference in their long-term self-esteem and understanding of how we can all build a better world!
