Dear Parents/Carers,
As part of our Raiders and Traders theme this term, we have arranged for a Viking workshop to visit us for the entire day on Thursday 9th March. A visit from a “real Viking” is a great way to give an overview of life during the Viking Age and covers many aspects of Viking life in depth. We would like to make the day of the visit a dressing up day, with the children coming to school wearing home-made Viking costumes, including a shield. Not only is this great fun and enthuses the children for the subject, but the shields can then be used for a ‘Shield wall drill’ exercise which helps to focus the children and get them working together. The day will involve many further ‘hands on’ experiences such as; making food, re-enactment, traditional entertainment, crafts and skills.
In order that this day can go ahead, we are asking for a contribution of £6.50 per child towards the costs. This will cover the cost of the materials and equipment that the children will be using, as well as our Viking visitors. We ask that you bring your monetary contribution for the day to school by Tuesday 7th March so that we are able to confirm the day will go ahead. Unfortunately, the day will not be able to happen without contributions from all children.
As part of the preparations for the visit, it would be nice if the children could make Viking shields as their homework this week. We appreciate that this is short notice; the shield would therefore take the place of their usual weekly homework task.
