Arburg at the Elmia Polymer 2018: Electric moulded part production and additive manufacturing
- Predestined for technical injection moulding: Allrounders from the electric entry-level Golden Electric machine series
- Flexible automation: Arburg offers a broad range of robots
- Additive manufacturing: Freeformer produces two-component functional parts from original material
Lossburg, 23/3/2018
At the Elmia Polymer to be held from 15 to 18 May 2018 in Jönköping, Sweden, ARBURG will be represented in hall C, stand 04.22. In the area of injection moulding, Arburg will demonstrate cost-effective automated plastic parts production on an Allrounder from the electric entry-level Golden Electric machine series. The potential of the Freeformer and of Arburg Plastic Freeforming (APF) for industrial additive manufacturing will be demonstrated by a Freeformer which produces a functional part in a hard/soft combination.
"Our customers in Scandinavia have a great need for innovative and high-quality technology. As examples at the Elmia Polymer 2018, we will be presenting an automated electric Allrounder from the Golden Electric machine series and the Freeformer for industrial additive manufacturing," explains Michael Kylling, Managing Director of Arburg Denmark. "Customer proximity is extremely important to us. As a reliable partner, we offer everything you need for efficient plastic parts production. In addition to machine technology, this includes automation, turnkey solutions, Industry 4.0 components, as well as comprehensive consulting and service."
Cost-effective automated moulded part production
With a machine from the electric entry-level Golden Electric machine series, Arburg will demonstrate the cost-effective automation of moulded part production at the Elmia Polymer 2018. This exhibit, an Allrounder 470 E Golden Electric with a clamping force of 1,000 kN, produces name tags from PS. On a 2+2-cavity mould, two plates and the corresponding fastening clips are produced in a cycle time of around 20 seconds. A linear Mulilift Select robotic system removes the moulded parts from the mould and sets them down onto a conveyor belt.
Golden Electric: high-performance, precise, energy efficient
The Golden Electric series is available in four sizes with clamping forces from 600 to 2,000 kN. The dual five-point toggle system ensures high-performance and fast cycles. The play-free spindle drives operate with great precision. The position-regulated screw ensures excellent moulded part quality. The electric entry-level machine series also features liquid-cooled motors and servo inverters and offers benefits in terms of energy efficiency, short dry cycle times and a high level of reproducibility. Compared to standard hydraulic machines, the high efficiency of the servo motors, continuous power adaptation and energy recovery during braking achieve energy savings of up to 55 percent. The machines are also easy to maintain thanks to swivelling injection units, plug-in cylinder modules and further improved lubrication and cooling.
Cost-effective, customised automation
The Multilift Select is the entry-level model among the linear robotic systems from Arburg. It features servo-electric drive axes and is fully integrated in the Selogica machine control system. For the operator this means: only one data set, a familiar approach during programming and synchronisation of robotic system and machine.
In addition to standardised automation solutions, customised turnkey systems are increasingly in demand. As a primary contractor, Arburg covers the entire turnkey spectrum: from consulting and project planning, implementation and installation, through to service for the complete production cells.
Industrial additive manufacturing
A Freeformer and a selection of functional components will be used at the Elmia Polymer 2018 to demonstrate in practice that Arburg Plastic Freeforming (APF) is not only suitable for prototyping, but also for the industrial additive manufacturing of functional components in particular. Visitors will be able to inspect the parts "hands on" at an interactive station and convince themselves of their functionality and quality. The exhibit uses the components PP and elastic high-performance TPE to produce retaining clips in a hard/soft combination for ski or hiking poles, for example.
The Freeformer is an open system that allows users to qualify their own original materials in the APF process and optimise the freely programmable process parameters specifically to their particular application. One huge advantage in this context is that original materials certified e.g. for medical technology or aerospace applications can be used. In addition to amorphous standard granulates such as ABS, PA and PC, the ever-expanding range of materials qualified by Arburg includes, for example, elastic TPE, semi-crystalline PP, medical grade PLLA and PC approved for the aerospace industry.

In addition to the Freeformer, numerous parts, as well as an interactive station where visitors will be able to experience their functionality for themselves, will be on view at the Elmia Polymer 2018. One example are cable clips from standard PP (Braskem CP 393) with a click effect.

About Arburg
A German family-owned company, Arburg is one of the leading global manufacturers of plastic processing machines. The product portfolio encompasses Allrounder injection moulding machines with clamping forces of between 125 and 6,500 kN, the Freeformer for industrial additive manufacturing and robotic systems, customer and industry-specific turnkey solutions and further peripheral equipment.
The company places the topic of production efficiency at the centre of all its activities, taking into account the entire value-added chain. The objective is to enable Arburg customers to manufacture their plastic products, whether as one-off parts or in high-volume production, with optimal quality and at minimum unit costs –
e.g. for the automotive and packaging industries, communication and entertainment electronics, medical technology or the white goods sector.
An international sales and service network ensures first-class customer support at the local level: Arburg is represented by fully owned organisations at 33 locations in 25 countries and by trading partners in more than 50 countries. The machines are produced exclusively at the parent company in Lossburg, Germany. Of a total of around 2,800 employees, about 2,300 work in Germany. About 500 further employees work in Arburg's organisations around the world. In 2012, Arburg became one of the first companies to gain triple certifications: ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment) and ISO 50001 (energy).
