“Process Audits will get you to the Real Issues”. Process audits are requirements of the current ISO 9001 and TS 16949 standards but they can be very much a value-added process if done correctly. This discussion points out some of the dos and don’ts of process auditing.
Mr. Ron Jarrett is a graduate of Purdue University with degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Administration. He retired after 13 years as Director of Quality for MKM Machine Tool Co in Jeffersonville, IN, a manufacturer of machined metal and injection molded components for the automotive and other industries. He was the ISO 9001 and TS 16949 Management Representative for two facilities and headed up the company’s Lean Manufacturing initiatives. Prior to that, he spent 16 years as a manufacturing consultant, focused on quality and process improvements. He also owned his own business for several years.
Mr. Jarrett is a member of ASQ and past chair of the Louisville Section. In that capacity, he also co-chaired the Regional Business Expo in Louisville, co-sponsored by ASQ, APICS, KPMI (Project Management Institute) and PMAL (Purchasing organization). This one-day event was built from zero to over 200 attendees in its second year. In retirement, he is living at the farmhouse where he grew up, east of Muncie, and is enjoying the fresh air. Ron is also RABQSA Provisional Auditor.

I would like to take this time to again thank Kitty Kamm for the very informative program titled: The Exploding World of Quality and Pay for Performance in Healthcare. I was not aware of all the data that is collected and analyzed by the hospitals. The topic was very informative and educational. Those whom attended the meeting enjoyed this program.
The slate of officers for the 2008-09 meeting year will be voted upon at the March meeting. If any of you would like to be considered to serve on the executive board, please contact the Section Chair, David Loehmer, Section Vice-Chair, John King or Secretary, Steve Moulder for details on job duties or interests.
Please take note of the change in the section meeting place and that a meal will not be available.
At this time I also want to remind everyone that it’s time for our section to award our annual scholarship. Thank you to all who have helped in the past and those who will help to review the applications and pick the winner.
I hope to see all of you at the next meeting.
2008 – 2009 Officer election – March 25th
We will hold an election for next year’s officers at the March 25th meeting. We’ve lost Andy Baucco since he has moved out of the area. We are seeking additional help. Dave, Steve and John have agreed to fill the necessary positions if we have no others wanting a position.

2007/2008 – Scholarship Program Announced
By John King
Our Scholarship Program for 2007/2008 has been rolled out via a letter to the “college-advising counselors” of all 45 public high schools in Howard, Miami, Cass, Kosciusko, Madison, Grant, Fulton, Hamilton, Tipton and Wabash counties in Indiana. This year the $1000 scholarship is being made available to high school seniors or current college students from those counties. In case you are wondering, the information that follows is available on our website as a means to communicate to college students who are actively seeking scholarships.
We are again promoting the theme of being “passionate about quality” to college-bound scholars in our area through this program. Which of the two listed scholarships will be awarded will be determined by scoring. (Additional information is available upon request.)
We plan to inform the recipient by phone on or about April 29, 2008 and award the scholarship to our recipient “guest of honor” at a meeting in Kokomo, IN on May 20, 2008.
The scholarship application process is designed to challenge applicants to think about, and articulate, how quality is integral to achieving excellence in their chosen profession. The criteria used, and for which scholarship one applies, depends upon the degree program pursued.
Applicants must be accepted into their desired degree program at a university or other post-secondary school. Payment will be in the form of a $1000 check written to their chosen school.
Applicants applying for the scholarship known as the "Quality through Math/Science/Technology Excellence Scholarship" are required to submit a résumé outlining their achievements in math, science and/or technology. Also required is a 250-word (minimum) essay linking quality with math, science and/or technology to achieve excellence and the end of benefiting society.
Applicants applying for the scholarship known as the "Quality through Community Service Excellence Scholarship" submit a résumé outlining their contributions of benefit to others. The 250-word (minimum) essay links quality with excellence in their chosen field of study to the end of benefiting society.
Applications are due by 11Apr08. Contact Scholarship Chair, John King, , to apply for the scholarship, or to obtain additional information.
There are still openings for application evaluators on the scholarship committee. Committee members rate and rank the applications, confer, reach consensus and ultimately select the applicant judged to be most deserving. For years I have been saying, “Being a scholarship committee member is one of the most rewarding ways that a section member can serve our community.” Each year my fellow committee members and I consistently seem to reconfirm that it’s been a truly rewarding experience to be involved with this program. If you would like to participate and earn re-certification credits in the process, please contact me at the address above.
