Just a reminder that most general information regarding day to day operation of the school is located in the Parent Handbook.
Enrolment Details
If at any time your details or your child’s details change (eg. phone numbers, address, emergency contact details etc) please notify the office straight away. This ensures clear communication between school and home. Thanks in advance.
AthleticsDays
Last Tuesday was our school Athletics day and congratulations to all of our students who gave their best effort on the day with not only their sporting skill but fantastic behaviour. Congratulations to all of the age champions and those who received encouragement awards on the day.
Friday 31st July is the Small School’s carnival at Walloon State School. Students will travel to and from the event by bus and are able to purchase lunch from the canteen on the day. Please come and support our students on the day.
Prep Open Morning
On Thursday 13th August we will be holding a Prep information morning for parents and prospective Preps for 2016. The morning will be held in the Prep Centre from 9-11am and will include relevant enrolment information, curriculum information and is followed by a morning tea. Please indicate on the bottom of the newsletter if you will be attending the information morning. Thank you.
Science Fair
In Week 6 of this term we will be holding a Science Fair for all of the students of Marburg. Each class will invite the rest of the school and parents in to have a look at their experiments throughout the day on Thursday 20th August. Each student will have prepared an experiment to display on the day and this information is available from the classroom teacher. A timetable of viewing sessions for each class will be in the next newsletter. For more information please contact Ms Kooyman at the school. Thank you
Bookweek Activities
In week 7 this term we are celebrating Book week. This year our theme is –“Books Light up our World”. Each class will investigate a variety of books during the week and we will hold our annual book fair where books can be purchased. Classroom teachers will discuss the dress up theme for the Friday with their class but it will be closely aligned to the theme for book week. More information will be available in the next newsletter.
PREP-1 NEWS
The class is working busier than normal, as the weeks have fewer days due to the sporting activities. Although I must say, they did a fantastic job on Sports Day and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The Preps have been given homework this week that asks them to write out some of the high frequency words. I think the earlier they are asked to write the words correctly, the more beneficial it will be to them in the long run. In the front of their homework books there is a copy of how all the letters of the alphabet should be written. The sooner the Preps get out of their habit of writing letters how they want to, the better. It is very hard to correct a bad habit in writing. I would ask that they tell you the route of the letters as they are being written.
In class, the words lists are practised every day. I say them, they repeat. Then they say them with me and finally they say them without my help. The more practice they get at home the better. When it comes to learning spelling, what the student really needs to know is how to write and recognise their spelling words. The Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check method can be very successful. Another way would be to write the word list on a piece of construction paper and then cut the words apart into strips. Then, cut those words into letters and have your child reconstruct the list. You could also sit down with your child, two pencils and a piece of paper. Tell your child the spelling word you’ll be practising and write the first letter of the word. Pass the paper to him/her so he/she can add the next letter. You add the letter after that, repeating until the word is spelled. Your child is not required to spell their words out loud for a test, so practice writing them is essential.
With our Slam Poetry, unit that we are doing in conjunction with Mount Marrow and Haigslea, the students have been looking at the rhyming words in the nursery rhymes and poems. They are enjoying the challenge of listening for those words that rhyme and where they are situated in the poem. We have also started to learn a poem that we hope the students will perform in September. Until next time, Ciao, Gail Ducci
2-4 NEWS Hello Everyone,
Our poetry unit is continuing well and the students have enjoyed watching a performance of prose writing. It can be found on YouTube under “Strict, Teacher, No breathing”. After our first viewing one of the students commented, “Now don’t get any ideas Ms K” and laughed. Please be aware that the student performances will occur toward the end of the term, possibly week 8/9.
Students will need to be practising their science experiments, for our annual Science Fair, at home. Event date is 20 August and students present that day to the entire school, as well as to any attending family and friends. These educational days are always enjoyed by the students and the audience alike, with many trying more experiments at home and therefore increasing their scientific learning. As in the past the student’s experiments will be collated into a booklet and sent home for each family.
Our class numbers are sitting steady at twenty-two. Camden has left and we wish him all the best at his new school. We welcome Brooklyn, year three, to our class.
Thank you to those parents who regularly check that their child has returned belongings home. Our lost property box is overflowing with quality jumpers, track pants and even tights. These items are a necessity at this time of year and, are much better off being used, than helping keep our box/floor warm. Any named items found about the school are promptly returned to the student.
As a culminating activity for three terms worth of science learning we are planning a trip to the Darling Downs Zoo. More information will be forth coming, however in order to assist families with budgeting, please be aware that this outing will cost approximately $25 per student and is being planned for the end of term three.
Until next time, stay well and warm. Regards Marina K
5-6 NEWS
Greetings for another fortnight at our lovely school. Over the last 2 weeks we have been investigating free verse and then using our knowledge to compose our own poems relating to a number of topics that have included- favourite food items, sports day, interesting places that store interesting things in my house and all about me. I am constantly surprised and proud of the efforts and work they are each able to not only produce but then share with the class. We are going to rock at the performance at the end of the term. Mrs O’Sullivan has integrated the performance poetry into her unit this term and is going to assist them to each develop skills in production through recording their performances with some camera equipment. Our class reading program has incorporated a variety of material to suit all interest levels including spitting Llamas, bathroom hitchhikers and where did the Zombie myth originate from. The students are exposed to a range of fiction and non-fiction texts in class time and for homework follow-up. This promotes a long term love of reading and the development of skills. We have been working on time this week and we have found that it is not just about having a watch or knowing when lunch is but relates to so many other units and measurements. If parents get time over the next 2 weeks please quiz your kids on 24 hour time as this still seems to be an area we need to work on. Please remember that Homework is due each Friday and if at any time you have any queries regarding your child please do not hesitate to call me or make an appointment to come up and discuss any concerns or progress. Please remind students to wear appropriate clothing on cold days and if there is wind around a lip balm is a very handy item to include in a school bag. Thank you and have a great week.
Until next time, Mrs N
Teachers like Sports Day too!!
A Message from the Library
Our annual Book Fair is held from Monday 24th August to Friday 28th August. Lots of books for varying age groups will be available for purchase through the library. The students have a “viewing only” day on the Monday where they attend as a class group and are given a slip to record their “wish list”. This in turn is taken home for parents/caregivers to look over, and then both parents and/or students are given time to come into the library to make their purchases during the week. The library receives commission on sales for further book purchases for the library.
