Encoding and Decoding a Station Model
PRESSURE
Pressure Facts:
a. All station model pressures are in millibars to the nearest tenth
b. The maximum range for pressures on Earth’s surface is 960.0 to 1050.0 mb
Encoding ONTO a station model:
1. Drop the first 9, or 10 so the LAST THREE digits remain
2. Loose the decimal…there is no room
3. Loose the unit…saves space
Try these: Encode 992.6mb ______Encode 1003.4mb ______
Encode 973.8mb ______Encode 1000.0mb ______
Decoding OFF of a station model:
1. If the first digit is 5 or less, add a 10 in front
If the first digit is MORE THAN 5, add a 9 in front
2. Place a decimal so the number has a TENTHS PLACE
3. Add the unit, mb
Try these: Decode 892 ______Decode 010 ______
Decode 774 ______Decode 139 ______
Complete Encode\Decode Practice sheet – 5 minutes
Continue on back
Pressure Trend Facts:
a. An increasing trend means the pressure WAS lower.
b. A decreasing trend means the pressure WAS higher.
c. If the pressure DECREASED, you ADD to find what it was
d. If the pressure INCREASED, you SUBTRACT to find what it was
e. All pressures are to the nearest TENTH
Try these: What does this mean? +4/ ______
What does this mean? -26\
______
What was the pressure 3 hours ago?
First, decode 036 = ______mb
Then, SUBTRACT 0.5 mb to find what the pressure WAS 3 hours ago
Answer ______Have this answer checked. Nice Job.
What was the pressure 3 hours ago?
First, decode 932 = ______
Then, ADD 1.8 mb to find what the pressure WAS 3 hours ago
Answer ______Have this answer checked. Nice Job. You are very smart
You have completed the STATION MODEL PRESSURE lesson. High-five your neighbor.

WIND SPEED AND DIRECTION
Wind Facts:
a. Wind blows down the stick INTO THE CIRCLE
b. Winds are ALWAYS named by where they COME FROM
c. Long feathers indicate 10 speed units (mph, or knots)
d. Short feathers indicate 5 speed units
e. Long feathers go on the end of the stick
f. Short feathers do not go on the end of the stick
Try these:
Indicate the wind direction for each: ___North____ Add feather for 10 kts
Get these checked ______Add feather for 5 kts
______Add feathers for 25 kts
Indicate the wind direction and speed for these models:
______
______
You have completed the station model wind lesson. You are very smart.
