Junior League Asks Orlando Community to Hustle to End Children’s Hunger

Volunteer Organization Hosts Revamped 5K November 7 with New Cause

ORLANDO, Fla.(September 22, 2009) – After kicking off a new League year with a focus on childhood, health, hunger and poverty the Junior League of Greater Orlando will host a revamped 5K run/walk November 7 in Baldwin Parkto support Second Harvest Food Bank and fund the creation of a new League-sponsored community program focused on ending childhood hunger.

“What better way to promote childhood health than running for a cause in a downtown family neighborhood like Baldwin Park?”said Stephanie Nelson Garris, President of the Junior League of Greater Orlando.

JLGO has reinvented its second annual 5K race as the “Harvest Hustle 5k: Race to End Childhood Hunger” to align with its new focus. The race will take place in Baldwin Park at New Broad and Jake Streets on Saturday, November 7th, at 8 a.m.with race participants and spectators asked to bring canned food items to donate to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

“The past year has been difficult for many in our community, with children being especially vulnerable. The League is committed to making the well-being of children, including ending hunger,a part of all of our work in the community even our fun events like the 5K,” said Garris.

According to statistics provided bySecond Harvest, more than 24 percent of the members of households in greater Orlando served by Second Harvest are children. “We appreciate the great support and awareness of hunger relief. Tying this food drive with the race is a great example of many ways of engaging the community. Everyone can help. Within 48 hours, this food will be going to those in need,” said Dave Krepcho, Second Harvest Executive Director.
