Mayo Clinic Health System - SE MN Region
Department of Nursing Student/Faculty Guidelines
Greetings! Thank you for your interest in placing students in the Department of Nursing at Mayo Clinic Health System in the SE MN Region. Here are several key points for you to be aware of:
- All RN and PN student placement requests must be entered via the TCCP system
- Please contact Elizabeth Biel, TCCP Director, at or 507.429.6653 if your school needs to set up an account or if you need training regarding how to use the system
- All other requests are submitted via email to the nursing education specialist coordinating students
- Albert Lea and Austin: Gretchen

- Preceptorship requests should be received per the TCCP established deadlines in order to be considered for placement
- An fully executed Affiliation Agreement is required for all internships and clinical rotations which outlines requirements for background screening, tuberculin skin test and drug screening
- All applicable student experiences must meet the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines to be considered unpaid
- All clinical rotations/preceptorship students must wear their school ID badge, the school is responsible for supplying the ID badge holderfor the student
- MCHS reserves the right to terminate any experience at any time for any reason
- Clinical rotation students and preceptees function under the supervision of the department manager, or their assigned preceptor
- Staff has the right to review written journals, reports, papers, etc. prepared by a student for confidential compliance
- All students who are coordinated through the Department of Nursing (RN, PN, MA, NA, HUC, Paramedic) are required to have a flu vaccine
- Non-Mayo employee students are not eligible to participate in the Mayo employee flu vaccination clinic
- Undergraduate preceptorship experiences are limited to a maximum of 120 hours per student at any Mayo site (applies to RN students only)
- These hours must all be completed at one Mayo site (for example, a student cannot complete 60 hours at one Mayo site and 60 at another)
- A student can only complete one preceptorship at any Mayo site in their academic career
- Faculty that are new to teaching on a unit will be required to complete at least an 8 hour shadow on the unit prior to leading a clinical rotation
- All students and faculty must complete an online orientation and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) training (if applicable) once per calendar year
- Orientation completion forms are to be returned to and maintained by the school. Orientation forms must be received by the school prior to the first day of the student experience

Student and Faculty Orientation Information
- Navigate to The Clinical Coordination Partnership (TCCP) website linked here:
- Locate the Mayo Clinic and Mayo Clinic Health System area; Students will click on the “Pre-Licensure Students” link and faculty will click on the “Pre-Licensure Faculty/Admin” link
- Read through the orientation packet linked on this page
- Print out and review the orientation forms, hand them into your school as they will retain these
- Print the following documents and retained for your clinical experience: Nursing Student May Not Perform List and Student Medication Administration Tool
- Please refer to SE MN site specific information listed on this page for site maps, parking information and emergency codes
Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Training
- If your clinical experience will require you to access the electronic medical record (EMR), you must complete online training prior to the start of your rotation
- Click on the “EMR Videos” link in the SEMN area on the “Pre-Licensure Students” page
- Then click on the “EMR Training Videos” link, please do not access the “Student Orientation Packet” that you see on this page
- If your clinical rotation will be in the acute care setting, please complete the “Hospital” and “Care Compass” videos
- If your clinical rotation will be in the clinic setting, please complete the “Clinic” video
- When you are prompted to enter a password to access the videos, please enter MCHSstudent
- These files can take a few minutes to load, please be patient
Pyxis ES Online Training for Nursing Faculty
Nursing faculty conducting group clinical rotations will have access to the Pyxis medication dispensing system. Students do not have access to the Pyxis machines. Nursing faculty can navigate to the following link to access online training for the Pyxis ES machines used in the SE MN region:
Please click on New User Registration and enter the appropriate information to create an account.
Once in the system, please look for the following class: CLP1107 - Pyxis® MedStation ES Station Tutorial for Nursing and Pharmacy
Click on Begin Training to launch the course.
Complete all sections of the training.
For nursing faculty that are new to the Albert Lea or Austin campus, an appointment with pharmacy is required to get set up in the system and complete training. Pharmacy contact information is provided below:
