AFIVE DAY TRAINING PROGRAM FOR CUNY STUDENTS WHO WANT TO MAKE CUNY A HEALTHIER UNIVERSITY

The CUNY Campaigns Against Diabetes and for Food and Housing Security are pleased to offer a five-day training program on issues related to food, diabetes, health and hunger. The sessions will be held between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., at The Graduate Center of CUNY, located at 365 Fifth Avenue (at East 34th Street). They will be conducted by Dr. Hollie Jones, a health psychologist at Medgar Evers College, Lorraine Mongiello, a nutritionist and certified diabetes educator at the Graduate Center and other CUNY faculty and staff.

Did you know?

  • 700,000 NYC residents have diabetes
  • 66% of New Yorkers are overweight or obese
  • 16% of families in NYC lack the resources to purchase food regularly
  • Healthy food cost 56% more than unhealthy food on CUNY campuses
  • Many CUNY student lack health insurance or a regular health care provider

In this workshop, students will learn about important ways to:

  • Advocate for healthier programs and policies at CUNY and in their communities
  • Prevent diabetes andobesity in their communities
  • Minimize complications of uncontrolled blood sugar among people with diabetes
  • Improve their own and others’ diet, exercise and health behaviors
  • Develop skills in small group facilitation and raising community awareness

Students will not receive academic credit for their participation, but will receive a stipend of up to $300, $150 will be provided at the completion of the workshop and $150 will be awarded upon completion of a community education or support project.Students who are planning summer or fall internships or field placement in settings where obesity, diabetes, or food or housing insecurity are serious concerns are especially encouraged to apply.Both undergraduate and graduate students are welcome.
