Samuelgrewtofunctionnotonlyasaprophet,butalsoasajudge,leadingIsraelinmilitaryexcursionsagainstthePhilistines (1 Samuel 7:6-8). When Samuel grew old,hewantedhissonstobejudgesoverIsraelashehadbeen.However,hissonsdidn’tfollowtheLordasSamuelhad.It’sinterestingtonotethatSamuel’stroubleswithhissonsweresimilartothosethathismentor,Eli,hadexperiencedwithhisownsons.

SamuelstronglyobjectedtoIsrael’sdesireforaking.HisobjectionsmayhavearisenpartlyfromthehurtcausedbyIsrael’srejectionofhimandhissons,butSamuelwasalsodeeply concerned by the people’s motives in seekingaking.BecausethepeoplealreadyhadtroubletrustingGod,SamuelknewtheywouldleantowardtrustingthekingandhismilitarymightinsteadofGod.

God didn’t want Israel to have a king, but thepeoplewantedakingsobadlythattheywouldn’tlistentoSamuel’swarnings(1Samuel8:10-18).Goddecidedtogranttheirrequest. God chose to use their demands to furtherhispurposes,buthealsocontinuedtoexpectthemtobefaithful tohim.

WhenGodchosetogiveIsraelaking,heproceededtoshowSamuelexactlywhothatkingshouldbe.Saul,whowasaheadtallerthanhispeers,wouldbereadilyacceptedbythepeoplebecauseofhisdominatingphysique.Godtold

SamuelaboutSaulthedaybeforeSamuelmethim(1Samuel9:15-16). And God “changed Saul’s heart” (1 Samuel10:9),apparentlytopreparehimtoleadIsraelbyrelyingonGod’spower.

As Saul was being installed as king, Samuel usedthesituationtoremindthepeoplethattheyhadrebelledagainstGodwhentheyaskedforaking(1Samuel10:17-19).ButhepresentedSaultothepeopleasthekingGodhadchosenandadmittedthattherewas“noonelikehimamongallthepeople”(1Samuel10:24).

WhyWeWorshipforLeaders

Godknowsbestabouteverything.Inlove,hecreateditalland,therefore,understandsitall.Heknowsandunderstandstheuniverse.Heknowshowmanystarsthereare,andhecallseachonebyname.Heknowseverysparrowthatfallstotheground,and,likewise,heknowseachoneofusandcallsusbyname.NotoneofusgoesunnoticedbyGod.

Godknowswhatwewant,andheknowswhatweneedtobetrulyhappy.WhenwetrustthatGodknowsbestandworshipandobeyhim,wefindtruejoyandfulfillment.WhataprivilegetoworshipaGodwhoknowsbestinallthings!
