AHOUSE RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR BARRY HARLEY, GILBERT HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AND HEAD FOOTBALL COACH, FOR HIS OUTSTANDING CAREER AS BOTH COACH AND EDUCATOR, TO CONGRATULATE HIM ON BEING NAMED 20152016 SOUTH CAROLINA ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATORS ASSOCIATION CLASS AAA ATHLETIC DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR, TO SALUTE HIM ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT, AND TO WISH HIM WELL IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the South Carolina House of Representatives honors those individuals who give tirelessly of themselves to educate the young people of this great State; and
Whereas, prominent in the roll call of such benefactors to our youth, Coach Barry Harley of Gilbert High School, for more than three decades, has sought to instill in his student athletes the skills and character traits necessary for success in the classroom, on the gridiron, and in the workplace; and
Whereas, his dedication and achievements recently were recognized when he received the covetedSouth Carolina Athletic Administrators Association (SCAAA) Class AAA Athletic Director of the Year award for 20152016; and
Whereas, Barry Harley began his long and successful career at Irmo, where he served as an assistant coach. In addition, he served as head coach at St. John’s High School in Darlington, at West Oak, and at MidCarolina, as well as at Gilbert; and
Whereas, not one to just sit in a rocker after retiring, Coach Harley, as his next endeavor, plans to head eleven miles west on the AikenAugusta Highway to his high school alma mater, BatesburgLeesville, where he will work as an assistant coach; and
Whereas, no doubt, working at his alma mater will bring back to Barry Harley memories of his own school days in BatesburgLeesville, where his parents still live. In that friendly town, he grew and graduated from BatesburgLeesville High the year before his friend South Carolina Representative Ralph S. Kennedy, Jr., did. During their college years, the two young men lived in the Kennedys’ beach house one summer while Ralph worked a summer job at C&S Bank and Barry took a summer school course at Baptist College; and
Whereas, the House of Representatives, grateful for the legacy of consistent commitment and excellence Coach Harley has bestowed on the people of South Carolina, takes great pleasure in congratulating him on receiving this latest accolade, the SCAAA Class AAA Athletic Director of the Year award. The members wish him all the best as he enters retirement and trust he will find much enjoyment in the more leisurely pace of the days ahead. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Barry Harley, Gilbert High School athletic director and head football coach, for his outstanding career as both coach and educator, congratulate him on being named 20152016 South Carolina Athletic Administrators Association Class AAA Athletic Director of the Year, salute him on the occasion of his retirement, and wish him well in all his future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Coach Barry Harley.
