Position summary

Provides clinical nursing expertise for a specialized patient population directing efforts toward the improvement of nursing care, attaining desired patient outcomes and promotion of cost-effective care. Utilizes a collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach to the care of the patient / family in their specialty area serving as an expert practitioner, educator, consultant, researcher and program manager. Educates and integrates specialized patient population growth and development into the delivery of patient care needs. Maintains responsibility for job performance specifications at designated hospitals within the Centura Health system.

education requirements

  • Masters degree from an accredited school of nursing, certification in specialty area and APN registry with the ColoradoState board of nursing is required. (effective July 2, 2010)
OR
  • Successfully completion of a nationally accredited education program for preparation as an APN OR a passing score on a certification examination of a nationally recognized accrediting agency. (effective July 1, 1995 to July 1, 2008)

work experience requirements

  • 2 years experience in the designated specialty area

License/certifications

  • Current Colorado RN/CNS License
  • Registered on the State of Colorado Advanced Practice Registry
  • Current BLS certification required from American Heart Association

Position duties (essential functions, INCLUDE % OF TIME)

PATIENT CARE- 20%
  • Develops, coordinates, implements and evaluates multi-disciplinary plans of care (clinical pathway practice guidelines, etc.) for a specialized patient population.
  • Assesses patient’s physical, psychosocial, cultural and spiritual needs. Evaluates patient care interventions and recommends revisions as necessary.
  • Assists staff in identifying and assessing patient care needs and formulating solutions to problems.
  • Implements therapeutic measures and performs necessary procedures in accordance with protocols or physician consultation.
  • Serves as a role model in the use of the nursing process through the production of direct patient care.
  • Reviews nursing standards of care, policies and procedures, competencies and orientation programs suggesting revisions where necessary.
EDUCATION – 20%
  • Educates patients and their families about current and potential health problems, the goals of medical therapy, and self-care skills to achieve independence and maximize wellness.
  • Provides formal and informal education and guidance on patient care to other members of the health care team at designated hospitals within the Centura Health system.
RESEARCH – 20%
  • Initiates and / or collaborates in research designed to improve patient care and advance nursing knowledge.
  • Communicates and initiates innovations in patient care based on advances in nursing practice and research.
  • Presents current and new research-based articles / advances in medical therapy in the form of inservices, staff meetings, classes and rounds.
  • Participates in professional organizations, attends professional workshops, conferences in area of specialty.
PROCESS IMPROVEMENT – 20%
  • Applies the research process to monitor the quality of nursing practice in area of specialty (performance improvement).
  • Tests and applies the research findings produced by others in area of specialty (research utilization).
  • Participates in collaborative research, assuming responsibility for minor aspects of the research process.
  • Conducts single subject (case study) research.
  • Conducts independent nursing research.
  • Participates in collaborative research, assuming responsibility for major aspects of the research process.
  • Serves as research preceptor or advisor for student or other researchers.
  • Seeks sources of financial support for research and writes grant applications for such funds.
  • Disseminates research findings through publication.
ADOVOCATE – 20%
  • Role models critical thinking skills through presentation of select patient case conferences and formal / informal discussion of challenging patient situations.
  • Serves as a patient and family advocate through providing consultation and education to the lay and professional communities.
  • Participates in hospital system-wide committees regarding staff / patient education.
