Math Department MAP Response

The MAP Assessment: Math 6+, measures the growth of every student over time. This adaptive assessment was administered to 9th and 10th grade Liberal Arts 1, Algebra 1 and Geometry students in November. MAP revealed the grade level performance of the students, as it relates to their math proficiency. Students were assessed in four categories: Operations and Algebraic Thinking, The Real and Complex Number System, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability.

The Data

Grade Level / # of Students Assessed / Level of Performance (Mean Score) / Grade Level of Performance
9 / 252 / 216 / 6th
10 / 241 / 220 / 7th
11 / 6 / 213 / 5th
12 / 15 / 220 / 7th

Category / Grade Level / Mean Score / Grade Level of Performance
Operations & Algebraic Thinking / 9 / 219 / 6
10 / 222 / 7
11 / 215 / 6
12 / 225 / 8
The Real & Complex Number System / 9 / 216 / 6
10 / 220 / 7
11 / 214 / 5
12 / 224 / 7
Geometry / 9 / 216 / 6
10 / 220 / 7
11 / 211 / 5
12 / 217 / 6
Statistics & Probability / 9 / 215 / 6
10 / 217 / 6
11 / 211 / 5
12 / 216 / 6

According to the data there is an overall trend of our students not performing at the appropriate grade level. We identify that our students are at least 3 grade levels lower than their current grade level in each assessed category.

Response To Data

With the data provided teachers it is apparent that there is a demand for teachers to modify their instructional practices, evaluate programs and professional development needs, and increase efficient collaboration with colleagues. To address this alteration in instruction, the math teachers have developed a framework that will foster student growth, through the implementation of differentiated instruction.

Liberal Arts Framework

Coconut Creeks Liberal Arts 1 Math classes are designed to increase a students’knowledge and application of basic mathematical concepts that are pivotal to the understanding of higher level math courses (Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, etc.). This class has transitioned into a full implementation of the MAP Learning Continuum.

As a result of the RIT scores each student has their own path for learning. Therefore, influencing the need of differentiated instruction. Below is the a visual of the MAP framework for Liberal Arts 1 Math.

EOC/MAP Framework

Coconut Creek EOC courses (Algebra 1 and Geometry) are the essence of the school’s grade and graduation requirements. Therefore the embracing of MAP and the data that the assessment yield has to correlate with the mandate of the Mathematics Florida Standards (MAFS). To address this blend of need and mandate, the EOC teachers will infuse the MAP continuum concepts throughout their instructional cycles. Below is the a visual of the MAP framework for the EOC math courses.

With the implementation of each MAP framework, our hope is that student achievement will increase. To ensure this increase will occur, teachers are availing themselves to collaborate, sharing best practices, track students’ progress, and analyze students’ work.
