Cell Organelle and Structure Catalog Project

Introduction

There is not much that you cannot buy from a mail order catalog these days. Our class will create a mail order catalog of the future from which people will be able to order essential and “nice to have” cell organelles and structures to make up their own “designer cells”.

For this project you will be given a 3” x5” index card on which is written the name of an organelle or structure and a list of vocabulary terms. Your assignment is to design a catalog page featuring your chosen organelle or cell structure.

Using textbooks, reference books, magazines, journals and websites, collect the answers to all of the questions on the “Cell Catalogue Page – Background Information and Checklist” and define all the terms on your index card.

Next, make a detailed, labeled sketch of your organelle or structure. Your vocabulary terms will help you determine what level of detail is necessary. This sketch will be used on your catalog page. (Please do not just print out a picture from the web and paste it on your catalog page. No points will be awarded for your sketches if you do this. Sketching the organelles and structures will help you understand them.)

Make a second quick sketch of a cell in which you would find your organelle or structure. Add your organelle or structure to the cell to indicate where it is located in the cell and how many a typical cell might have.

Catalog Page Requirements

·  Size - Your catalog page should fit on an 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper.

·  Headline – a catchy title or headline that tells the customer why they need this organelle or structure for their designer cell.

·  Three additional “why-to-buys” – three bulleted phrases that explain why this particular structure or organelle is a necessary or advantageous choice.

·  Sketch of organelle or structure – An original sketch with all main features listed on the index card labeled. Approximate size included

·  Sketch of cell – shows the location and approximate number of organelles or structures in a typical structure.

·  Explanatory Paragraph - a brief paragraph that summarizes the structure and function of the organelle. Make sure that answers to questions # 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 11 on the Information sheet are covered here. Vocabulary terms should be included and defined here too.

·  Pricing Strategy – your pricing per organelle or structure should reflect the final “designer cell” target cost of $29.95.
