Adaptation- A change that an organism makes over time in order to increase its survival in an environment.

Arctic- A place in the far northern hemisphere where polar bears are located.


Blubber- A thick layer of fat underneath the skin of the bear to help keep it warm.

Carnivore- A flesh or meat eating animal.

Chuffing- A deep low noise that is made by polar bears. The most common noise that polar bears make, it is often made when they are in distress.

Habitat- The type of environment in which an organism or group normally lives or is located.

Lead- Water channels in the ice that remain open for a limited period of time.

Nomadic- An animal that moves from place to place in order to follow its prey.

Prey- An animal that is hunted.

Still Hunting- A hunting technique used by the polar bear where it finds a seals breathing hole and waits for it to surface.

Stalking- A hunting technique used by the polar bear where it carefully creeps up on a seal that is basking itself in the sun.
