Course Description

The AP® Studio Art Portfolio and portfolio development course is designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art and wish to develop mastery in the concept, composition, and execution of their ideas.AP Studio Art is not based on a written exam; instead, students submit portfolios or evaluation at the end of the school year. In building the portfolio, students experience a variety of concepts, techniques, and approaches designed to help them demonstrate their abilities as well as their versatility with techniques, problem solving, and ideation. Students also develop a body of work for the Concentration section of the portfolio that investigates an idea of personal interest to them.

Course Requirements:

  1. The course promotes a sustained investigation of all three aspects of portfolio development—quality, concentration, and breadth. The body of work submitted for the portfolio can include art created prior to and outside of the AP Studio Art Course.
  2. The course enables students to develop mastery (i.e. “quality”) in concept, composition, and execution of 3D design
  3. The course enables students to develop a body of work investigating a strong underlying visual idea in 3D design that grows out of a coherent plan of action or investigation (i.e., a “concentration”).
  4. The course teaches students a variety of concepts and approaches in 3D design, so that the student is able to demonstrate a range of abilities and versatility with techniques, problem solving, and ideation (i.e. “breadth). Such conceptual variety can be demonstrated through either use of one or the use of several media.
  5. The course emphasizes making art as an ongoing process that involves the student in informed and critical decision-making.
  6. The course includes group and individual student critiques and instructional conversations with the teacher, enabling students to learn to analyze and discuss their own artworks and those of their peers.
  7. The course teaches students to understand artistic integrity as well as what constitutes plagiarism. If student produce work that makes use of photographs, published images and/or other artists’ works, the course teaches students how to develop their own work so it moves beyond duplication.

Classroom Expectations:

  • Be punctual–when the bell rings you should have a pencil and your sketchbookat your assigned seat
  • Be quiet and attentive during instruction. – Follow directions the FIRST time they are given.
  • Use “ table voices” at all times.
  • Be respectful of property, supplies, classroom and people.
  • Clean up after yourself – 10 minutes before class ends.
  • Put forth your BEST effort at all times.
  • No iPods, MP3 players, or cells phones are to be used in class.
  • No food or drink in class.
  • This classroom adheres to ALL school and countywide rules.

Consequences:

1st Offense - Verbal warning

2nd Offense - Verbal warning and seat change

3rd Offense – Detention, parent phone call, and/or office referral - Severe misbehaviors may go directly to 3rd offense.

Course Requirements

Students will earn grades in these 3 categories (1/3 each)

Studio

Projects

  • You will have one new project every two weeks in a different media or technique.

Students are required to complete three sections of the portfolio: Quality, Concentration, and Breadth.

  • Breadth-First two grading periods. 16 photographs of 8 different works, 2 views each. Works demonstrate understanding of 3D design principals through a variety of media, techniques, and subject matter. The works should emphasize the elements of art (line, shape, form, space, texture, value, and color) organized using the principles of design (unity, variety, balance, emphasis, rhythm, repetition, pattern, and proportion/scale).
  • Concentration– 12 photographs exploring a single visual design concern in depth. The student is expected to spend considerable time developing a personal idea. It should show investigation, growth, and discovery involved with a compelling visual concept.
  • Quality- 5 works, 2 views of each. These photographs of artwork can be original or they can come from the concentration or breadth section.

Academic

  • Students will be expected to complete homework and plan for projects in their sketchbook.

Participation

  • You will receive points for coming to class on time, being prepared, staying on task, displaying a positive attitude, and cleaning up. These responsibilities are worth 2 points a day.
  • If you are absent, due to a school related function with proper documentation, the participation points do not have to be made up. The points will be excused for that day and will not hinder your grade.
  • If you are absent from class, and it is not due to a school related function, you will lose the daily participation points for that day. Points for the absence can be made up during lunch on blue days only and afterschool by appointment. For every 15 minutes spent during lunch, 1 point will be added towards the absent participation grade.
  • AP students- More than three absences during a semester may result in probationary measures for the enrollment in the course.

Late/absent

  • Absent students must pick up work on the next day of the class, but it is due the following day.
  • Work not turned in on time must be given a grade of zero. See pirate pact/ code.
  • Work from an unexcused absence or OSS must be dropped a full letter grade.
  • Any assignments given 10 days or more in advance, are due on the scheduled due date, regardless of how any absences during the course of the assignment.
  • Absent student’s work will not be graded one week past the scheduled due date.

Midterm and Final Exam

Your midterm and final will be a digital portfolio and presentation of your work so far. It is worth ¼ of final grade for the semester.

Midterm = Summer work through December

Final = All artwork completed this year.

YOU MUST BRING A PENCIL EVERY DAY!!!

A journal/sketchbook (at least 8” x 10” with white unlined pages and no larger than 9” x 12”)- available to purchase in class for $5.00(Supplies limited) A sketchbook can also be purchased at Wal-Mart or Michaels. Please do not purchase sketchbooks that glued at the top because they will fall apart.

Due to the rising cost of materials required to provide a quality art program, it is necessary to ask for a monetary classroom donation. Twenty dollars is suggested, but any donations are greatly appreciated. Checks should be made out to BCHS and have your address. Please write a separate check for sketchbooks and donations.
