Puccinia hemerocallidis

Extracts of reports of EPPO Meetings

As mentioned on the introductory section of the Web page on PRA documents, PRA documents are working documents which have usually been produced by an assessor whose opinion may have been commented during Panel meetings and comments have usually not been included in the PRA documents but are found in Panel meeting reports. This document consists of extracts of EPPO Meetings’ discussions on Pest Risk Analysis documents on the relevant pest. Discussions on Pest Specific Phytosanitary Requirements (PSPR)[1], have also been reported when relevant as they include elements on possible risk management options.

6. EPPO Alert List: annual review

6.3  PRAs proposed in support of retention on the Alert List

Puccinia hemerocallidis

The Panel was presented with an CSL summary pest risk assessment prepared by Mr Jones (GB). Mr Bartlett noted that this pest had been detected in imported consignments on several occasions. Mrs Roy added that this pest caused serious damage on some cultivars of daylily. No chemical treatments were generally applied to this garden plant. She added that the origin of the pest remained obscure. It had been reported only from Asia and, recently, from North American countries, but the latter only imported Hemerocallis from South America. Mr Bartlett suggested that surveys should be conducted in Europe to check whether it had not already been introduced.

The Panel concluded that this pest should be retained on the Alert List. Further information may be presented at the next meeting.

8.  Candidate Pests for EPPO listing

8.2  Review of pest risk assessments

·  Puccinia hemerocallidis. P. hemerocallidis is a heteroecious rust. The telial hosts are only Hemerocallis spp. (Hemerocallidaceae) which are common perennial garden plants in the EPPO region. From the wide and rapid spread of P. hemerocallidis under various climatic conditions in USA, it is considered that it could survive in most parts of the EPPO region. The introduction of P. hemerocallidis would lead to the application of treatments to a horticultural plant which so far hardly needed them. Mr Bartlett explained that many new scientific articles have been published on this pest, which seems to be a serious problem in areas where it occurs. Mr Bartlett agreed to update the summary PRA before the end of May, so that the Secretariat can prepare a report of PRA to present to the Working Party.

Provided the information is available for the Working Party, P. hemerocallidis will be proposed for listing on A1 list.
