What is TIGed?

TakingITGlobal for Educators (TIGed) provides rich, interactive global learning experiences by leveraging the resources of the world’s most popular online community for youth who want to make a difference. We bring a global education perspective to the most innovative applications of online social networking and digital media to create relevant, engaging, and student-centered learning opportunities. The TIGed tools include:

·  Virtual classroom communities that teachers create and moderate to fit the needs of their students and objectives of their

curriculum

·  Activities database with lesson plans connecting TakingITGlobal’s content to Mid-continent Research for Education and

Learning (McREL) curriculum benchmarks and 21st century skills

·  Student blogs, podcasts, maps, image galleries, live chat, discussion boards, and student writing features that allow students to demonstrate their learning and develop a portfolio of their work, while expressing themselves and engaging in constructive dialogue around important topics

·  Educators’ collaboration center that enable educators to network and find partner classrooms

·  Collaboration tools to support project-based partnerships between classrooms in different parts of the world

·  Curricula and games providing specialized content on timely global issues.

Social networking for social good: TIGed not only gives students an online space to customize, connect with others, and share ideas on a global level, it also gives educators an additional level of access to support meaningful student research and literacy on major social issues. TakingITGlobal is an educational community where students are empowered as learners and leaders beyond the classroom.

TIGed is an advertising-free space where online privacy and safety are paramount.

W h o Uses TIGed?

Since its launch in 2006, thousands of educators and students have joined TIGed. Teachers are integrating the tools and content in innovative ways into a range of learning environments – from service learning and civic engagement, to one-to-one laptop programs, online learning and virtual schools. To learn more about examples of TIGed’s uses, see our best practices guide.

Research and partnerships with school, district, university, and NGO educators have been integral to the development of resources that both introduce inventive approaches to global learning and directly meet the needs of teachers and students in the classroom.
