Introduction to Site Stewardship
Objectives: Learn more about the protection of our heritage and the cultural resources of the area, assess if this is something attendees are interested in doing.
I. Classroom Section (9:00 - Noon)
Introduction (State SiteWatch Coordinator Norm Nelson and former State SiteWatch Coordinator Phil Young).
· Outline of program, history & structure
· Purpose and Goals
· Program participants: DCA/HPD, partners, volunteers
Culture History Review
· Overview of NM archaeology (Dr. Proctor, Assistant State Coordinator)
· Region-specific archaeology (Sandra Coambs, USFS Archaeologist).
Ethics (Young, Proctor)
· Archaeological ethics overview (SAA, ASNM, NMAC, etc).
· Our responsibilities as stewards
· Sensitivity to cultural groups
· Land management/ownership
· SiteWatch Codes of Conduct
How things get lost - what to look for (Nelson/Young)
· Natural degradations
· Human-caused degradation

Field Operations Overview (Proctor/Nelson)
