FTP SERVER AVAILABLE TO ON-LINE FACULTY FOR VIDEO/AUDIO FILE TRANSFERS
The DLVPC has set up an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) server for use by UMB’s on-line instructors who create their own audio and video files for uploading to the DLVP streaming server (allowing these files to be accessed by students in UMB on-line courses).
DLVPC has installed the FTP server as an alternative to having on-line faculty transferring media files to DLVPC staff as file attachments to email messages. Media files normally are extremely large. A single media file can file the mailbox of both sender and recipient, causing a barrage of “disk quota exceeded” messages for all concerned.
The FTP server provides and efficient way for on-line instructors to transfers files from almost any computer on the internet. When informed of a file transfer, DLVPC staff will transfer the files to the DLVPC streaming video, test the files, and report the URL’s of the resulting realmedia and/or quicktime files to the instructor, who can then notify students of the availability of new course media.
To use the FTP server, please contact DLVPC Program Coordinator Alan Girelli via email to or via phone call to 617 287-5419. Alan will create an account on the FTP server for use by on-line instructors and will issue instructors a username, password and instructions for accessing and using the FTP server.
While some instructors using the FTP server have installed FTP client software to enable file transfers to the FTP server, most are using a recent version of the web browser, Internet Explorer (v. 6.0 or higher), which they ‘point’ to the web address: ftp://158.121.110.69.
Although you will not be able to access files and directories on the FTP server until you have been assigned a username and account, you may (if you wish) test your ability to access the server from home, office, public library, etc. by pointing an Internet Explorer Window to the web address of the FTP Server. If you are prompted with the following dialogue box, it is nearly certain that the computer from which you have access the FTP server is configured to handle FTP transfers to the DLVPC FTP server, or can be configured to do so easily.
Please note that you may update your version of Internet Explorer at no cost at the Microsoft software update site appropriate for your version of Windows or Mac OS. Visit and selection option #5, “Internet Explorer 6.”
If you using a computer running any version of Windows XP, you should find your have Internet Explorer 6.x installed on the system already. If you are using a computer running Windows 98, NT. 4.0, 2000 or Windows ME, the link to option #5, “Internet Explorer 6” will get you to the appropriate download options directly. However, if you are on a computer running a version of the Macintosh OS, find a link to “Macintosh and Other Platforms” located on the left frame of the page under the heading: “Download Categories.”
Alan will provide more comprehensive written instructions and one-on-one consultations regarding accessing and using the FTP server to on-line instructors who request an FTP account on the server.
The DLVPC staff looks forward to helping on-line faculty succeed in using the FTP server to transfer streaming media to us for uploading to the streaming media server.
