2016 Awards Ceremony Press Release

This is the 31st running of Race to the Sky. Our race marshals this year were Rob Greger, 20 year volunteer, Randy Camper, 18 year volunteer and sponsor of official’s patches and Clayton Perry, 1st year. They each received a signed art print by Charley Shipley.

Our race manager Sarah Deveraux of Helena did a great job. She thanked Tim McCutcheon, who was her “man on the ground in Helena” and Jason Frisk, Mike McCutcheon and Mikaila Stinar to the checkpoint assistance. Thank you.

Thanks to the year-round board members Peter Bogy (board chair), Jack Beckstrom (board treasurer) – 31 year volunteer), Tracy O’Reilly (board secretary – 20 year volunteer), Roy Etnire, Bill Daugereau, Pam Beckstrom (board member and Race to the Sky secretary, too – 31 year volunteer) and Jody Deveraux. They each received a special design coffee mug.

The race veterinarians were: Kathy Topham from Ohio, Dr. Phil Topham also from Ohio, Dr. Colleen Marion from Canada, Dr. Kendra Carlson from Wisconsin and Roberta Ronald from Canada, our vet tech extraordinaire. They received signed race prints.

Volunteers received special edition coffee mugs were: Cara Greger, Jerry Cain, Liz Cain, Shelby Goodman, Cyndy Braun, Nancy Braun, Mikaila Stiner, Jean McCreight, Penny Johnson & Family, Ken Rosenbaum, Jason Frisk, Tim McCutcheon, Larry Edwards, Jeff and Chris Otto, Bruce Graham, Fred Beyer and Capital Trail Association. Carol and Bob Blanchard received a framed print and mugs for White Tail Checkpoint.

Junior 100 Mile Race to the Sky finishers. They received their awards on Sunday afternoon in Lincoln.

Best Cared for Team award went to Laurie Warren and Carl Knudsen

received the Sportsmanship Award for helping Miriam Lindstahl after taking a

wrong turn. Steve Madsen and Charmayne Morrison withdrew from the 100 on

Saturday.

1st place Jessie Royer, Darby, MT finished Monday at 8:39 a.m., 11 dogs , trophy, check for $4,000, jacket donated by Cabela’s.

Dr. Kathy Topham presented the coveted Best Cared for Team Award to Josi Thyr. She received a plaque, 2 bags of Tuffy’s, Nutri Source Dog Food. The Best Cared for Team Award was sponsored by the Pocket Foundation.

The Sportsmanship Award was not given to a musher from this year’s race, it was given to a volunteer, Shane Pearson of Choteau, for helping re-establish the trail as the race continued. The mushers vote for this award and with warm temperatures and rain, Pearson helped the trail crew immensely. He received a 12 dog, cable filled gangline from Adanac Sleds and Equipment.
