Describe the 3-5 most important ways that you plan to be involved outside the classroom in the life of the School of Business, KU, and the business community at large. Throughout my next two years as a KU business student I plan to continue progressing in my current activities as well as take on new challenges. I was recently reelected as a Member of the Alpha Kappa Psi board as the VP of Alumni Relations. Being a senior this year and having been a member of the board in a different position last year, I plan to take a strong leadership role in the fraternity. Additionally, I want to continue getting involved in the business-mentoring program. I have just been hired as a Teaching Assistant for Business 210 and 220. This is a new class that is designed to mentor the early-admitted students to the business school. I’m hoping to help the professor come up with interesting ways to integrate the underclassmen into the business world, as well as into KU. I will also be taking on a new role as a grader for Accounting 201 this coming semester. I am very excited to hold office hours and see students face’s light up as they begin to understand the usefulness of managerial accounting in the “real world”. After having spent almost 7 months straight working at accounting internships, I have gotten a pretty good grasp on what the business world is like outside of KU. I plan to stay in contact with many of my peers who I met at work and continue to build a strong network that will stick with me once I am working full time.
Describe the 3-5 most important ways that you plan to be involved in experiential learning and leadership opportunities in the School of Business. One way I have already gotten involved in experiential learning is by participating in two internships. These internships gave me the opportunity to experience the accounting world from both a public and private perspective. I plan to continue this experiential learning by attending as many firm related events as possible over the next year, and see a little more of the social aspect that goes into business. Another aspiration I have for next year is to become an actual member of Beta Alpha Psi. This society provides opportunities to network with business professionals and begin developing many of the social skills needed to survive in the business world. I am currently a candidate, but after having completed ACCT 410, I will now be eligible for membership. Additionally, one of my other goals of being a Teaching Assistant has recently come true. As a TA one is expected to act as a role model for the class and must take on a great amount of responsibility. That ability to be confident and lead a group is another important characteristic that I hope to master in the next year in order to be a successful business professional.
