Oceans 11 – Map Exploration
Goal: to become familiar with the earth’s continents, key oceans and seas, and Canada, in particular the Maritimes.
Directions: Using an atlas, world map or online resources complete the following map exercises. It is very important you are familiar with these maps for this course and upcoming evaluations.
1. Label the following 6 continents on your map in pencil. Color the continents all one color.
o Africa
o Antarctica
o Australia
o Eurasia
o North America
o South America
2. Label the following 5 oceans. Color each a different color.
o Atlantic Ocean
o Arctic Ocean
o Indian Ocean
o Pacific Ocean
o Southern Ocean
3. Find the equator on a World Map (either in atlas or online source). Using a ruler, draw this line on your map. Label it Equator off to one side of your map.
4. Find the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn lines on a World Map. Using a ruler, draw these lines on your map. Label them off to one side of your map.
5. Label the top half of your map (above Equator) the Northern Hemisphere. Label the bottom half of your map (below Equator) the Southern Hemisphere.
6. Locate and label the following seas/Gulfs/Bays:
Arabian Sea,
Baffin Bay,
Bay of Bengal,
Beaufort Sea,
Bearing Sea,
Black Sea,
Caribbean Sea,
East China Sea,
Coral Sea (Great Barrier Reef),
Gulf of Mexico,
Hudson Bay,
Sea of Japan,
Labrador Sea,
Laptev Sea,
Mediterranean Sea,
North Sea,
Okhotsk Sea,
Red Sea,
Ross Sea,
Tasman Sea
7. Label the following islands: Azores, Baffin Island, French Reunion, Galapagos Islands, Hawaiian Islands, Iceland, Mauritius, Madagascar, Maldives, New Zealand, Sri Lanka
8. Color in and label the following geologic features: Cascadian Subduction Zone, Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Mariana Trench, Southwest Indian Ridge
9. Draw in and label both the Arctic and Antarctic Circles.
10. Label the following features on your Map of the Maritimes (attached)
