SAFETY COMES FIRST / OPERATING GUIDELINES
Although NERF guns have been designed for kids to safely shoot darts at each other, the 501st Legion Council has carefully devised safety operating guidelines required by members to follow while conducting this event. These guidelines were put in place to help prevent any accidents from occurring.
The following are operating safety guidelines that must be used by members and enforced by the event planner:
1) Only NERF type guns that shoot foam darts may be used. Use of a mechanically modified gun is prohibited. Patrons are also prohibited from using their own guns for event use. Any gun or devise that does not meet the guidelines established by the 501st Legion is prohibited.
2) For guns that fire more than one dart at a time automatically, those guns must have a working on/off switch or a working safety switch to prevent firing until it is safe for use.
3) Anyone standing in the arena area must wear the provided safety glasses. Wearing prescription eyeglasses are accepted. Safety glasses are not required for those wearing helmets that provide protection to the wearer’s eyes.
4) Firing the NERF gun is only allowed at the event table and in the direction of the arena. The Gun Loader or staff will load, turn the guns on and direct participants when it is safe to fire.
5) No firing is allowed during the photo breaks.
Event Description
Participants make a donation by handing it to the “Cashier”. A “Gun Handler” will hand the gun over to the participant. Standing behind a table, they will attempt to shoot NERF darts at costumed Star Wars characters. The costumed characters are called “Targets” and they stand and move around in an area called the “Arena”. If the Targets move around and dodge the darts it provides for a more fun and challenging event. When the participants are finished they will be directed into the “Arena” for a free opportunity to take photos (using their own cameraOR we may have a person there taking photos and could possibly email the photos out to participants) with the “Targets”. During this time volunteers referred to as “Nerf Herders” will sweep up and recover the darts.
A separate line can be made available for those wishing to only get photos with the Targets. Although photos are free, a separate donation container could be made available that will allow them contribute to the cause as well.
Freebies
Depending on what we can get together...we may offer free items as a gesture of thanks to the participants. For example, we may have stickers printed up which say something like, "I shot a Trooper for (Charity Name)” on name tag stickers. The benefit of using the stickers is that they also serve as promotional tools as the participants walk around. We will also have some Imperial Training Manuals printed up (basically a small Star Wars activity book) forany kids to take.
