1.INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this Circular is to inform school management and educators at public secondary/combined schools about training of educators on the National Curriculum Statements (NCS) for the
- General Education and Training Band (GET) (Grades 8 9 only) and the
- Further Education and Training (FET) Phase (Grades 11 12 only).
This training is in preparation for the implementation of the NCS in GET, Grades 8 and 9 in 2007, as well as preparation for implementation of NCS in FET Grade 11 in 2007 and Grade12 in 2008.
2.PLANS FOR ORIENTATION
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) will provide the NCS orientation for Grades 8, 9, 11 & 12 educators during the course of the 2006 academic year.
3.CONTENT OF ORIENTATION
3.1General Education and TrainingNCS
The content of the Grades 8 and 9 orientation programme will focus on in- depth application of the NCS in each Learning Area. Learning Area specific content and assessment requirements will also be dealt with.
3.2Further Education and TrainingNCS
The content of the Grades 11 and 12 FET NCS training will notbe the same as the Grade 10 orientation training. The training will focus on the subject specific content and assessment requirements for Grades 11 and 12.

5. TARGET AUDIENCE FOR ORIENTATION
The following public secondary/combined school educators will be expected to attend the scheduled training:
- GETNCS (Grades 8 9): Only educators who will be teaching the 8 Learning Areas in Grade 8 and Grade 9 in 2007.
- FET NCS (Grades 11 12): Only educators who will be teaching Grade 11 and 12 in 2007.
- Educators Appointed by SGBs and Educators from Private Schools (Grades 8, 9, 11 & 12)
−All SGB appointed educators and educators from Private Schools are invited to attend the training. However, they are requested to make their own arrangements to pay for the training costs.
−Educators from these categories of schools will be required to register for the training with the GDE. Details of such registration arrangements and payment logistics will be provided to schools by end of April 2006.
PLEASE NOTE:
Thementioned Grades 11 and 12 training dates are applicable to all educators except those who are teaching the following subjects:
- Arts Subjects: Visual Arts, Dance, Music, Design and Dramatic Arts
- Technology Subjects: Electrical Technology, MechanicalTechnology,Civil Technology, Engineering Graphics and Design
- Computer Applications Technology (CAT)
- Information Technology (IT)
- Religion Studies
- Agricultural Subjects: Agricultural Science, Agricultural Management Practices, Agricultural Technology
The educators of the above-mentioned subjects will be trained by the National Department of Education (DoE).
Training for SMTs (both GET and FET) on curriculum management will be arranged at a later stage. Schools will be given details of such arrangements timeously. However, all School Managers are required to attend the orientation programme for subjects that they teach at schools.
- INFORMATION REQUIRED FROM PUBLIC SECONDARY/COMBINED SCHOOLS
6.1In preparation for the training, schools are encouraged to ensure that all educators bring to the following NCS policy documents:

6.2School management will receive a memorandum from the District Office, which will request details of educators who will attend the orientation for Grade 8, 9, 11 and 12.
6.3It is the responsibility of school management to ensure that the educator details provided to the District Office are accurate.
6.4Following the submission of educator details to the District Office, each school will be sent a form which must be verified and resubmitted to the District Office. The form will indicate the following:
- The total number of educators per grade who will be attending the training.
- The details of each of the educators.
6.5Attendance to training sessions is compulsory for all the scheduleddays.
6.6 Refreshments will be provided at training venues.
