YEWLANDS TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE

Background Information

The Location

Yewlands Technology College is a secondary school serving almost 900 eleven to sixteen years old students from an extremely diverse local community and is situated on a pleasant, open site near the north-eastern boundary of Sheffield. The school is at the forefront of Sheffield’s Building Schools for the Future programme and has recently moved into newly built ‘state of the art’ teaching accommodation. This includes a Learning Resource Centre and administrative accommodation along with a completely refurbished science centre. The comprehensive rebuilding programme was completed in May 2009 with the addition of a new dining room, assembly hall, sports hall and creative media and music suite.

In addition the City Learning Centre is based on the same site. This offers state of the art Information Learning Technology facilities with which the school can supplement its own, already impressive Information Technology capability.

The School Vision

‘We aim to ensure that all young people progressively develop their skills, attitudes and values through a personalised curriculum, thus enabling them to become effective, passionate and independent life-long learners.’

The School Aims

  1. Meet the personal, social and learning needs of each individual in a healthy, safe and secure environment
  2. Help all young people reach their full potential by equipping them with skills for life as a 21st Century citizen in a local, national and global community
  3. Ensure that our students learn about, and empathise with, other cultures and traditions throughout the world
  4. Encourage every student to pursue a healthy lifestyle
  5. Make learning fun!

Delivering the Vision

To deliver this vision and its supporting aims the school uses its status as a specialist technology college to promote learning ‘any place and any time’ and to ensure that our specialist facilities remain at the cutting edge often equalling in quality that used by local industry and businesses.

The new buildings and facilities have been developed with the focus firmly on teaching and learning to provide an environment that links the most appropriate curriculum for each pupil with state of the art facilities to provide excitement and motivation for all learners.

Highly committed, professional staffensure that students are well cared for and challenged. A strong support network is in place to ensure that students feel safe, happy and secure in a friendly environment based on mutual respect and a clear behaviour management policy that focuses on rewards for good behaviour, excellence and effort.

In recent years the school has steadily improved academically with examination results rising annually.

Partnerships

Yewlands Technology College has a reputation for developing strong partnerships in school with students; locally, with parents, primary schools and the local authority; nationally with organisations such as the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust and the National College for School Leadership.

Of particular interest is the work done over the last five years in developing the Yewlands Family of Schools which comprises; Yewlands Technology College, a special school, a Roman Catholic primary school and four other primary schools. One result of this work is the provision of a seamless 3-16 years curriculum for all young people based on essential skills for independent learning – we define these as communication, cooperation, teamwork, self management, creativity and team working, problem solving and helping others to learn. Having started developing these skills at primary level the students continue their development in these skills during their first year with Yewlands Technology College.

The School Staff

The school employs in excess of fifty teachers supported by twenty five teaching assistants, learning mentors, student tracking coordinators and technicians, administrative staff and a premises and facilities team. Personal development is given a high priority and all staff members are encouraged in this through our performance management and personal development processes.

Relatively high levels of education support staff demonstrate the importance placed on the pastoral organisation within the school to ensure that the atmosphere within the school is a caring and safe one.

The school is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
