Grade 1: Chapter 5 – Addition and Subtraction Relationships
Chapter Essential Question: How can relating addition and subtraction help you to learn and understand facts within 20?
Before(Kindergarten) / Chapter Five Standards
Grade One / After
(Grade Two)
Understand addition as putting together and adding to, and understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from.
(K.OA.1, K.OA.2, K.OA.3, K.OA.4, K.OA.5_ / Operations and Algebraic Thinking 1: Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing with unknowns in all positions, e,g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
· I can solve addition and subtraction problem situations using the strategy make a model.
· I can choose an operation and strategy to solve an addition or subtraction word problem. / Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. (2.OA.1, 2.OA.2)
Operations and Algebraic Thinking 6: Add and subtraction within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on: make ten (e.g. 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 – 4 = 13 – 3 – 1 = 10 – 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 – 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g. adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13
· I can record related facts within 20.
· I can identify related addition and subtraction facts within 20.
· I can apply the inverse relationship of addition and subtraction.
· I can represent equivalent forms of numbers using sums and differences within 20.
· I can add and subtract facts within 20 and demonstrate fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.
Operations and Algebraic Thinking 7: Understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false.
· I can determine if an equation is true or false.
Operations and Algebraic Thinking 8: Determine the unknown whole number in an addition and subtraction equation relating three whole numbers.
· I can use related facts to determine unknown numbers.
· I can use related fact to subtract.
Each day the math block will begin with 15 minutes of Daily Math Review and Mental Math. The focus of DMR should be either prerequisite standard skills or previous chapter concepts that were not mastered. The focus of mental math should be based on the current Chapter’s skills and concepts. Adjust the amount of questions in DMR and MM to fit into the 15 minute time block.
Suggested Chapter Pacing
All lessons are paced for one day, unless otherwise indicated. Teachers may adjust to meet students’ needs.
