Classroom Procedures

“Rules of the Road”

Tardiness and Cutting

“...tardiness adversely affects the learning of all students in a class.” Therefore, our class will adhere to established school-wide guidelines.

Cheating

“Cheating consists of any schoolwork a student submits for evaluation that is not done by himself/herself. Knowingly sharing work with another student who then submits that work as his/her own is also cheating. Plagiarism consists of the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thought of another author and the representation of them as one’s own work. Plagiarism and cheating in any form are considered discipline matters to be addressed by the school.”

Materials

You will be expected to bring the following materials to class: your textbook, a pen and pencil, an agenda book, and a 3-ring binder designated for English class.

Make-Up Work Procedure

  1. The assignment that was given for the evening before you were absent will be checked on the day that you return. Please have it ready. Thank you.
  2. Please check the class calendar to learn about missed lessons and assignments.
  3. Check with your classmates or on the class website for a copy of class notes.
  4. If you remain uncertain about the work that you missed, please email me.
  5. When you return, please meet with me to answer any specific questions or to schedule times to make up missed assignments.

Note: I am available after school every day from 2:32p.m.–3:02p.m.Please let me know in advance if you wish to meet after school. If I have afternoon commitments, then I will let you know in advance.

Homework Policy To receive credit, you must honestly complete the entire assignment and pass it in on the day that it is due. Please talk to me about making up missed or late assignments, and I may award credit on a case-by-case basis.

Turn-it-in.com

  1. Please submit two copies of each essay assignment (1 on paper and 1 electronically).
  2. Failure to submit either copy will result in a 5 point penalty per copy per day.
  3. Failure to submit an electronic copy of an essay may result in a grade of 55%
  4. Failure to submit either copy within 3 days of the due date will result in a 0%for the assignment.

Rewrite Policy

Note: If you fail to follow these guidelines, then you will not earn any additional points on your final draft.

  1. A student is allowed 1 rewrite per term, and it is due no later than one week after the final draft is returned to you.
  2. You must conference with me beforeattempting the rewrite.
  3. When you have completed your revisions, please turn in the revised copy and the final draft. If you fail to hand in both copies, then you will not receive any additional points for your revisions.
  4. Your final grade for the essay will be the higher of the two scores.
  5. Points taken off for a late paper may not be earned back on a rewrite.

Assessment Procedures

  1. Do not begin your test until instructed to do so.
  2. Before you begin, we will review the directions together.
  3. You may leave your seat at any time to get extra materials.
  4. Students will be allowed bathroom breaks only after they have completed their tests and handed them to me.
  5. If you have a question, please raise your hand, and I will come to your desk.
  6. I will give you frequent time updates.
  7. Unless mandated by an Individualized Education Plan or a 504 Plan, there is no extra time allowed.

Grading Policy

Ordinarily grades will be determined according to the following guidelines: tests (10%), essays (45%), quizzes (10%), homework (20%), and class participation (15%). Semester exams count 10% of the semester grade. A research paper will count for approximately 20% of your first term grade.
