APPLICATION DUE DATE: April 21, 2017
Using Case Studies in Teaching Workshop
The “Using Case Studies in Teaching” workshop is intended to provide Fred Hutch post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and staff scientists with an opportunity to learn about the use of case studies in science teaching and to begin to develop a case study that could be published in a peer-reviewed collection of case studies.
About the Using Case Studies in Teaching Workshop
The workshop will run from Friday, June 2 through Monday, June 5, 2017. It will meet for a half-day on Friday (afternoon), all-day Saturday and Sunday, and a half-day (morning) on Monday at the Fred Hutch. Participants will learn about the case studies approach to science teaching and how it fits into national models of science teaching (e.g. Scientific Teaching and the Vision and Change Initiative). Case study teaching will be modeled and participants will have the opportunity to practice teach a case. Additionally, participants will begin to write a case. Well-developed cases may be taught in a class at New Mexico State University. Participation in the workshop will contribute to developing knowledge of and credentials in evidence-based teaching.
Dr. Michèle Shuster will facilitate the workshop. She is an associate professor in the Biology department at NMSU, with extensive undergraduate teaching experience. Dr. Shuster is a recipient of the Donald C. Roush and Westhafer Awards for Teaching Excellence at NMSU. She has also published several case studies and is the lead author on an issues-based biology textbook for non-science majors.
