Migration of Anglo settlers to Texas
Question: What perspectives or points of view can you identify from the issue of migration of Anglo settlers to Texas 1820-1835?
Summarize important information related to each key term/question:
- Spanish Control of Mexico- How strong was Spanish control of Mexico in 1800?Santa Fe Settlement – How does Santa Fe represent Spanish attempts at control of their colony?
- Moses Austin Why did Spanish and Mexican officials allow an Anglo colony in Texas?
- Mexican Revolution- How did the Mexican revolution affect Anglo migration to Texas?
- Stephen Austin- Why did Anglo settlers want to move to Texas?
- Santa Anna -How did Santa Anna try to limit the immigration of Anglos into Texas?
Spanish Control of Mexico-begins around 1600 by 1812 the power of Spain to control its colonies is at an end.
Spain is in decline losing power and the empire is disintegrating.
However in an effort to maintain their claim to all the territory it claimed the Spanish government tried to create settlements in the farthest portions of their territory.
For example Texas New Mexico, and California- we know of these a Missions (See Map)
Santa Fe Settlement
Santa FeNew Mexico was one of the oldest permanent settlements dating back to 1609.
With 379 families and 1285 people of Spanish and mixed blood by 1768.
Spain claimed significant territory in North America in an effort to hold this territory settlements were established, New Mexico- Santa Fe 1609 (by 1820 there were 7000 Latino residents), California Missions, and Tejas.
By 1820 not many people lived in the areas of Northern Mexico (Spain still controlled Mexico), the Spanish government wanted to build the population in order to hold the land from the Comanchero Indians.
1820, Moses Austin was an American from Missouri, who wanted to help settle Texas and get rich in the process.
Moses petitioned the Spanish government and was given permission to colonize/settle 300 Anglo families on 200,000 acres of land near San Antonio. Moses dies before Anglos settle in Texas.
Anglo Settlers are encouraged to come to Texas-
(See Page 491 for info)
Mexican Period
Mexican Revolution after years of turmoil and fighting the Spanish government relinquished control and Mexico became an independent nation. The new Mexican government allowed Stephen Austin to continue his father’s work and form an Anglo colony near San Antonio.
Stephen Austin (1793-1836), son to Moses, takes over plans for an Anglo colony in Texas. A new agreement was created and the Mexican government allowed Austin to bring 300 families and create a colony in Texas. Basically Austin wanted to get rich by brining people to Texas.
Austin was a good salesman.
Anglo settlers wanted to come to Texas for cheap land.
However settlers had to follow certain rules:
- Learn Spanish
- Follow Mexican Law
- Convert to Roman Catholic Religion
In the beginning things went well. The settlers had much autonomy similar to the colonies of New England. The Mexican government allowed Austin and the Texans to develop partly due to the distance from the Mexican government located in Mexico City.
Anglo Texans begin to cultivate cotton and more and more Anglos poured into Texas, and within a decade a considerable number of settlements had been established at Brazoria, Washington-on-the-Brazos, San Felipe de Austin, Anahuac, and Gonzales
Problems Develop:
The colony gradually developed more Anglo than Mexican
Anglo settlers outnumbered Mexican nationals in Texas.
By 1830 there were between 20,000 and 30,000 Anglo settlers and 2000 slaves in Texas.
Anglo settlers- were protestant, wanted to be part of the United States and some wanted slavery in order to profit from the cotton industry.
The Mexican government outlawed slavery in 1824 and Austin was able to get approval for Texans to own slaves.
1833 Santa Anna takes over- popular with some Mexican leaders and wants to reform and strengthen the Mexican Government’s control throughout Mexico.
He wanted to reduce:
- Anglo immigration
- Anglo Trade
- End slavery
“Either the government occupy Texas now, or it is lost forever.”
1835 New Constitution
1835 Texans revolt they want:
- To keep their autonomy
- Keep their Anglo way of life
- Eventually join the United States
Santa Anna refused to allow this and jailed Stephen Austin for some time.
Texans decided to secede from the MexicanRepublic and begin to form a militia.

"...... it is very true that I threw up my cap for liberty with great ardor, and perfect sincerity, but very soon found the folly of it. A hundred years to come my people will not be fit for liberty. They do not know what it is, unenlightened as they are, and under the influence of a Catholic clergy, a despotism is the proper government for them, but there is no reason why it should not be a wise and virtuous one."---Santa Anna in reply to former American envoy to Mexico Joel Poinsett after his capture by Texians 1836
