5E Learning Cycle Instructional Strategies for our Unit

Phase 1: Engage

Capture student attention, activate student prior knowledge, stimulate thinking, raise key questions, etc. [1]
Lesson X. How will you initially engage your students in this unit?
·  Describe how you will capture students’ interest.
·  What kind of questions should the students ask themselves after the engagement? (i.e., What further learning will be stimulated?)
Phase 2: Explore
Allow students to observe, record data, isolate variables, design and plan investigations, create graphs, interpret results, develop hypotheses, and organize their findings.
Lesson X. What is your plan to provide time for your students to explore this topic?
·  Describe what hands-on/minds-on activities students will be doing.
·  List “big idea” conceptual questions you will use to encourage and/or focus students’ exploration
Phase 3: Explain
Introduce laws, models, theories, and vocabulary. Guide students toward coherent generalizations, and help students understand and use scientific vocabulary to explain the results of their explorations
Lesson X. What strategies will you use to guide your students to a deeper understanding of the content and/or skills they are learning?
·  Student explanations should precede introduction of terms or explanations by you, the teacher. What questions or techniques you will use to help students connect their exploration to the concept under examination?
·  List higher order thinking questions which you will use to solicit student explanations and help them to justify their explanations.
Phase 4: Elaborate/Extend
Provide students an opportunity to apply their knowledge to new domains, raise new questions, and explore new hypotheses. May also include related problems for students to solve.
Lesson X. How do you plan to extend learning for your students? (Ex. Skill learned is applied to a different situation; Add a new skill to explore the topic or a new method to solve the problem in a different way; Compare/contrast results with another investigation; Apply knowledge to a new situation or to a different content area, etc.)
·  Describe how students will develop a more sophisticated understanding of the concept.
·  How is this knowledge applied in our daily lives?
Phase 5: Evaluate
Administer formative assessment (although checking for understanding should be done throughout the lesson)
Lesson X. How will you incorporate evaluation into your unit (this can include student self-evaluation, student evaluation of an investigation method with suggestions to improve, formative assessment, summative assessment of learning, etc.)
·  How will students demonstrate that they have achieved the lesson objective?
·  This assessment process should be embedded throughout the lesson as well as at the end of the lesson

Select at least 2 of the lessons outlined in your unit plan and develop a full lesson plan for each.
