Ch. 2 Economics, Politics, and Public Policy
Concepts:
· All environmental issues function within an economic context.
· The economy is dependent on goods and services provided by ecosystems.
· Minerals and energy are obtained from the environment.
· To have a sustainable economy the manner in which we use the resources from the environment must be sustainable.
· When short-term economic decisions are made that leave out environmental consequences, tremendous damage can be done.
Key Vocabulary
Economics-production, distribution and consumption of goods and service
Economy-the system of economic exchanges
GDP- gross domestic product= sum of all goods and services produced (consumed) in that country
GPI- genuine progress indicator=measure of economic progress which calculates positive and negative economic activities to reach a more realistic view of sustainable economic activities
Tragedy of the Commons-overuse (and damage or depletion) of a renewable resource that tends to occur when the resource is treated as a commons (open to all)
