A Few Safety Tips
Be Aware of the risks you assume by participating in this program. Read your Engaged Learning Agreement carefully. Take care while you serve and when travelling to and from your service site.
Communicate with your supervisor about safety procedures at your service site and about what is expected of you. Know your role and stick to it!
Know how to contact your supervisor or another staff member at your service site in case you encounter a problem or are unsure of something.
Maintain professional boundaries between yourself and the people you serve with. For example, it is not a good idea to disclose personal information to clients or people you don’t know, to offer rides in your personal vehicle, or offer money or special treatment to any of the clients at your service site.
If you encounter any situation that makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, remove yourself from that situation, and communicate with your supervisor and with the Engaged Learning coordinator to find a solution.
In an emergency, call 911
If you have questions or concerns regarding
your Engaged Learning experience, contact your
site supervisor, your instructor, or the
Engaged Learning Coordinator, as appropriate.

What is Engaged Learning?
Engaged Learning is a way to enhance your classroom learning and do something good in your community. Engaged Learning students serve with an organization that needs volunteers, then reflect on that experience and complete an assignment for course credit.
I’m in a course with Engaged Learning, how do I get involved?
The first step is to pay a visit to the Engaged Learning Coordinator in her office on the first floor of Campion College. There, you’ll fill out some paperwork, and you can get some help finding a service site that will work for you.
You’ll be responsible for contacting the organization you’ll work with, getting a criminal record check, and keeping track of the hours you serve. You’ll also be expected to meet again with the Engaged Learning Coordinator to reflect on your service, as a way of helping you think critically and productively about your experiences.
Your instructor will provide you with details about the assignment that will be associated with Engaged Learning for your course.
I’m not in any courses with Engaged learning, can I still participate?
Absolutely! The Engaged Learning Coordinator can help any student find useful service to do in the community. Volunteering is a great way to make friends, challenge yourself, build networks, and develop useful skills and experience, all while serving others. Interested students may also sign up for group reflection sessions to enrich their service experiences.
