ASUCD LONG-RANGE PLAN

The Aggie Student Store

I. PURPOSE AND HISTORY

The Aggie Student Store opened February 7, 1994 as a division of the ASUCD Coffee House. The plan to operate the store came as a result of the 1985 student referendum which, among other things, enabled the Coffee House to move and expand. The convenience store concept was developed when the demand for it was identified and space became available. An agreement was made between ASUCD and the Uc Davis Bookstore whereby the convenience store would sell all the “penny candies,” granola type bars, etc. that the Corral previously sold. The Student Store now sells items under 50 cents known as “changemakers,” sodas, and food items. The Corral would accordingly maintain sales of regular-sized candy bars, toiletries, and other non-food items.

The ASUCD Aggie Student Store strives to offer the most convenient shopping for snacks on campus. Freshly popped popcorn, warm Churros, cookies, potato chips, ice cream and fat-free hot pretzels round out the wide assortment. The store also stocks over 120 cold drinks including ICEE brand slushees.

In 1994, a 9-month casual employee was hired to manage the Aggie Student Store. Five student employees were then hired to work during the day and to close every night. In 1995, the Aggie Student Store employed one full-time career position and nine student employees.

In 1997, the Aggie Student Store was determined by the ASUCD Senate to be financially sound and capable of operating without the oversight of the Coffee House. Subsequently, the Aggie Student Store became a unit independent of the Coffee House. In 1999, the career position was replaced with the student positions of General Manager and Assistant Manager.

In 2006, after two consecutive years of losing money, the Aggie Student Store returned as a division of the ASUCD Coffee House. The Coffee House team provides management support and facilitates operations to allow the Aggie Student Store to most effectively conduct business.
