THE INTERVIEW:
I. QUESTIONS – Because there are nearly 200 positions at KJHK every semester, we cannot feasibly interview each applicant. Instead we rely solely on the application to determine who our best candidates are. On a separate sheet(s), type a response to each of the following questions.
Answer 1-6 for all applicants, 1-7 for special program DJs
(1) Why do you want to work for KJHK? What do you expect to gain from working at KJHK? What skills make you a good candidate for working at the station?
(2)In your opinion, what are KJHK’s roles on campus? Within Lawrence? Within culture? What attributes make a radio station worth listening to?
(3)We'd like you to pick five albums that are significant for you, ideally from different genres and eras. What is it about these albums that you like? What do you dislike about them? Should we play the album on KJHK?
(4)Why are rotation shows important? What makes a rotation show stand out or relevant to the community? What do you think you will add to KJHK rotation?
(5)We receive hundreds of applications each semester. With all of these people wanting to do shows, what sets you apart? Are you helping KJHK achieve its goals?
(6)EVERYONE: Please carefully read the KJHK mission statement:
“As the University of Kansas’ student-run radio station, KJHK strives to enrich the KU and Lawrence communities by engaging, informing, and entertaining through means that go beyond programming.”
Do you believe that KJHK fulfills its mission? How so? How will you personally fulfill this mission?
(7)What is your special program idea? Describe in detail the show’s content, how you would present it, and why you believe it deserves to be part of KJHK programming. Remember competition for these few spots is the toughest. What does your show offer that KJHK currently lacks? If your application for a special program is not accepted, would you like your application to be considered for a rotation, beatlovers or jazz show? Please specify.
(8)For sports staff applicants only: What can you bring to the KJHK sports staff? What makes for a good sports talk show? A bad one? What do you look to get out of the sports department at KJHK?
II. VOICE-CHECK TAPE – All on-air applicants that have not completed a semester-long on-air shift at KJHK must submit a voice-check tape on a standard cassette or CD-r with the application. The recording doesn't need to include music but begin the recording with at least two minutes of your own voice, speaking as you would on-air. Past tapes have included a concert calendar, and back-announcing a hypothetical set of music.
III. MEETINGS – All successful applicants are required to attend a monthly all-staff meeting.
Are you prepared to organize your work and school schedules in order to attend all-staff meetings, the first Wednesday of every month, at 5:15 pm in the Kansas Union’s Alderson Auditorium? Yes No
IV. RULES & REGULATIONS – To be a KJHK employee, DJ or otherwise, you must know and obey the rules and regulations of the station. This is vital to our continued existence. Please review them in our handbook: under “staff info.” If you are new to the station, you will also be informed of these rules during training. Violation of KJHK’s station rules will result in your termination.
Do you agree to follow KJHK’s rules and regulations as set down in the handbook and in training Yes No
V. STATION MAINTENANCE– All KJHK employees must help maintain the cleanliness of the station. All staff members (especially DJs) are expected to clean up after themselves. This includes refiling music, throwing out trash, and maintaining a neat working environment. It is also part of your job to keep the station tidy even when someone else created the mess. Staff members, especially DJs, who continue to create a cleanliness problem at KJHK will be fired.
Do you agree to keep KJHK a clean, professional environment every time you work or DJ? Yes No
