Olympic Games:
· The Olympic Games were held in London from the 27th July to the 12th August 2012. There were in the region of 45 physiotherapists accredited either by a National Governing Body (sport) or by the BOA. The Medical Headquarters team was made up of 8 physiotherapists and 7 doctors. The physiotherapy team was:
· Caryl Becker (British Olympic Association - Chief Physiotherapist)
· Phil Glasgow (Head of Sports Medicine – Sports Institute of Northern Ireland)
· Ian Horsley (Technical Lead and North-West Lead Physiotherapist for the EIS)
· Sian Knott (Lead Physiotherapist for Sport Wales)
· Fiona Mather (Head of Physiotherapy - Scottish Institute of Sport)
· Greg Retter (Rehabilitation Manager – British Olympic Medical Institute, Intensive Rehabilitation Unit)
· Sandy Tubby (Physiotherapist – EIS South-East)
· Ashleigh Wallace (Technical Lead and South-East Lead Physiotherapist for the EIS)
This team formed part of the wider Performance Services team which included a soft tissue therapist, a psychologist, sport scientists and administration personnel. A Medical Centre incorporating the usual clinic type areas used by physiotherapists and doctors, a recovery area with sauna, ice baths and a hot bath as well as an area for preparation was provided in an 800m2 building opposite the athletes accommodation block in the Olympic village. The centre provided practitioners and athletes with the best possible support and created a working environment which encouraged a more professional approach and replicated as far as was possible the type of environment that both were used to working out of when at home at their usual training bases. It also allowed for a number of additional practitioners to support their athletes even if non-accredited through the ‘day pass’ system. This too ensured that athletes competing in the London Olympics received unprecedented support.
