Situation 1: With a runner on 3rd, the batter swings and misses on the 3rd strike and the ball hits him. The runner on 3rd runs home and scores when the ball bounces away from the catcher. The batter is out or safe? The runner scores or returns to 3rd?
Answer: The batter is out. The runner returns to 3rd.
Situation 2: With runner on 1st, the batter bunts foul on the 3rd strike. The batter is out or not out? The runner may advance or not advance?
Answer: The batter isout. The runner may not advance.
Situation 3: There are runners on 1st and 2nd. The batter bunts a 3rd strike resulting in a foul pop-up which is caught by the catcher. The catcher throws to 1st where the bag is tagged before the runner can return. The 1st baseman throws to third where the bag is tagged before the runner from 2nd arrives. The batter is safe or out? The runner at 1st is out or safe? The runner at 3rd is safe or out?
Answer: The batter is out? The runner at 1st is out. The runner at 3rd is safe.
Situation 4: With runners on 1st and 3rd, the batter hits a ball which is not touched by the pitcher, but which strikes the base umpire. The batter bats again or is awarded 1st base? The runner at first stays at first or is awarded 2nd base? The runner on 3rd remains on 3rd or scores?
Answer: The batter is awarded 1st base. The runner at first is awarded 2nd base. The runner on 3rd remains on 3rd.
Situation 5: The batter hits a ball into right field and is going into 2nd where he over slides the base and is tagged. The batter is out or safe?
Answer: The batter is out.
Situation 6: The batter hits a ball into the bleachers and the ball ricochets off of a spectator’s hand and into the glove of an outfielder. The batter is out or not out? This is spectator interference – yes or no? The ball is alive or dead?
Answer: The batter is not out. This is not spectator interference. The ball is dead.
Situation 7: With runner on 1st, the batter hits a ground ball to the 1st baseman who steps on 1st and then throws to 2nd where the base is tagged before the runner arrives, but no tag is made on the runner. The batter is safe or out? The runner at 2nd is safe or out?
Answer: The batter is out. The runner at 2nd is safe.
Situation 8: With runners on 1st and 2nd, the batter hits an “Infield Fly.” When the Infield Fly is dropped, the runner on 2nd advances to 3rd where that runner is tagged out before reaching the base. The batter is out or safe? The runner at 3rd is out or back to 2nd?
Answer: The batter is out. The runner at 3rd is out.
Situation 9: The batter listed in the 4th position of the batting order bats out of turn in place of the batter listed 3rd in the order. The batter hits a single before the 1st pitch is thrown to the next batter it is discovered the hitter was out of order and the proper appeal is made. The batter is out, remains on 1st or is removed from base? The batter listed 3rd in the batting order is out or not out? After the appeal, the next batter should be the 3rd batter, the 4th batter, the 5th batter?
Answer: The batter is removed from base. The batter listed 3rd in the batting order is out. After the appeal, the next batter should be the 4th batter.
Situation 10: While the batter is batting, it is discovered that an illegal bat is being used. The batter is out or not out? The bat is removed or not removed? The game is forfeited or not forfeited?
Answer: The batter is not out. The bat is removed. The game is not forfeited.
