RTV 322 / 409 Final Cut X Project
1. Attend the training session during your Project Shift 11/3-7. Help others learn if you already know it well. Every person attending must rotate on the station and sit and do multiple edits to learn and/or to demonstrate to others. Every other person must watch and assist and stay involved while one is at the edit station. If you leave and/or chat you are counted absent and receive project grade reduction.
2. You will use one of the five folders on the desktop of the Student log-in for your raw materials. Use the separate page to the right of the computer to select which folder to use. At your Project Shift Time, BE SURE YOUR NAME IS PLACED in the next available sign up slot on that sheet.
That separate page also shows which files from that raw footage to use. It says SB1 or SB 2 for which interview clip within your Editing Project folder to use, then it says something like :00 - :45 –saying that the two sound bites of :10 to :12 each that you should put into your project should come from that part of the interview clip. Next, it will show you which b-roll clips to evaluate and use if they’re good (like 1-15). If you need more that those, simply select any other clips from your desktop folder. When starting to work on your on own project work -- create a folder with your name inside the F14 FCP Project external drive.
Do not delete files within these five folders on the desktop—once you have selected your clips, drag and drop them to your project folder (to copy them from the one source into your folder) that is inside the Fall 2014 structure as we have already been doing. BUT—for FCP X, this is only your raw footage folder, not a scratch disc or place to identify as the destination for your edited project.
3. TO GET STARTED EDITING –
a) find the correct script linked on the Project Guide that fits your raw footage. YOU WILL RECORD THE VOICE TRACKS YOURSELF before your scheduled edit time.
b) Add the voice tracks to your own raw footage folder where you put your clips.
c) From the group of files you are supposed to use, after playing and identifying the ones you think will work as b-roll during your voice track and as cutaways, do as noted above. Select about 4-5 more than you actually expect to use. DO NOT JUST COPY THEM ALL TO YOUR FOLDER. Makes notes as you identify the b-roll you want to use so you know which ones you’ll transfer to your folder. Once you have identified those clips, and drag and drop only those into your project folder, name each clip inside your folder in a way that you are comfortable with. This will include at least one file that has an interview segment from which you will select two different sound bites.
d) You should record your voice tracks either by using a camera with a clipped on mic in a quiet location or by using Audition and saving them as mp3 files.
e) Once you have assembled all your raw materials, start editing in FCP X. See the basic steps directions listed to the left of the computer. You MUST begin by creating a new Event, and then a new Project, named YourLastName FCPX project.
f) Properly save the project when done. Upload this file and send the URL to .
You do this in FCP X by going to File, Share, YouTube (or Vimeo, if you want). (You can separately choose to export as a file, but then have to manually upload.) NOTE that you MUST change settings—especially so that it is NOT private, which is the default option.
The project must be completed and submitted before your shift time next week. SO – Monday 9:30 group, due by 5 pm this Friday. Both Monday afternoon groups, due before 2:00 pm next Monday. Tuesday / Wednesday groups, due before 2:00 pm next Tuesday / Wednesday, Thursday group due before 2:00 pm next Thursday. Friday group, due by 10 pm next Thursday.
REMEMBER -- there is only one edit station – you must do this work on our station. You should reserve One Hour of editing time—and if you wait too late and the station is full, it will be at your own risk of not meeting deadline.
