Stage 1 – Implementation of Move n Play into all YMCA Lesson Plans for PCY and Child Care.
Develop a Team of Internal Trainers who can deliver training to front line staff in PCY, Child Care and AFL.
a)Build Knowledge Base of Internal Trainers by having them take Move n Play Training, NCCP Community Leaders in Physical Literacy Training and AFLCA Ever Active Kids Training
b)Complete Move n Play Trainer Champion Training in partnership with Be Fit For Life Centre, City of Edmonton, Steadward Centre and YMCA so these internal Trainers can deliver in house training.
c)Deliver Move n Play Training for all front line staff in PCY, Day Camps and Child Care 3-2 times a year (June, Fall, Winter) as needed
d)Complete Internal Audit Process to ensure Move n Play theory and activities are part of all daily or weekly lesson plans in PCY, Day Camps and Child Care Programming.
e)Four of our Internal Trainers attended Physical Literacy Assessment Training through CS4L to see how we can use this as an organization in our Physical Literacy Strategy (in preparation for stage 2 below)
f)Have 2 of our Internal Trainers and Strategic Leads attend the International Physical Literacy Conference to see how we can do more as an organization and in preparation for stage 2 below)
g)Change Program Directives in PCY Sports, all Day Camps and all Preschool Programs to have Physical Literacy Directives and Activities around Move n Play

Stage 2 – Implementation of FMS (Fundamental Movement Skills) and Physical Literacy Assessments in certain AFL and PCY Programs and Services
a)Have 10 or more of our Internal Trainers get FMS Trainer status in partnership with Servus Place, City of Edmonton, Steadward Centre and YMCA plus any other interested partners though PLAY
b)Have 10 or more of our internal Trainers attended Physical Literacy Assessment Training through CS4L

Fall 2009 / We conducted an Internal Scan of After School Drop In Kids Programs for ages 3-5 and 6-12; Little Rascals and Mighty Munchkins (2 Hour drop in program (4-6 PM; highest attendance between 4:10-5:30 PM)
  • Program was running in smaller Multi-Purpose Room spaces
  • Program only included 20-30 minutes of Physical Activity. We found the programs to be 20-25% Physical Activity and 75-80% to include board games, crafts, video games, small toy stations and reading

  1. A commitment to change the Program to be more active and move it into a prime time space that supports Physical Activity; Gymnasium and Indoor Playground.
  2. The Preschool, Child & Youth Program Supervisors (PCY) Task Group took on the re-design of these after school programs

Fall 2009 / We conducted an Internal Audit on Kids Registered Sports Programs (Saturdays and After Schools). Findings:
  • Drills needed to be more inclusive; no line ups
  • Program needed more developmental progressions
  • Sport Specific Games were required to introduce sport skills
  • Staff need training to be able to do the above and hire more staff with NCCP

  1. PCY Taskgroup Sport Experts (BPE, Coaches, YMCA Canada Fitness Trainers and Bed) created some sample lesson plans and training events for staff.
  2. NCCP and people with experience with leading sports were hired to deliver programs.
  3. Staff were trained on Sport Specific games that can better introduce a sport rather than trying to get beginners to play a full sport by the rules.

2010 / As a result of the Internal Scan, we changed After School Programs to be more active and changed the Names to “Mighty Munchkins” and “Kids Squad”.
  • Booked the Gymnasium and committed to keeping the kids in the Gym for 70-120 minutes of the 2 hour program. Also use the Indoor playground
  • PCY Group created sample lesson plans.
  • Local YMCA Canada Fitness Trainers and PCY Supervisors trained the PCY Staff on Program changes and how to play games and movement activities with the kids

  1. Program attendance has grown 5-20% in all YMCA’s
  2. Children have Prime Time access to Gymnasium
  3. Physical Activity time in the Program was tripled

Summer 2011 / Made Changes in the Day Camp Program to include increasing supervision and activity standards as well as a real commitment to Weekly collection of feedback from Parents and Campers. Also committed to responding quickly to feedback / Learned a lot from Parent and Camper feedback to implement an internal scan and repackaging of Summer camp for next year (2012)
Fall 2011 / Started an Internal scan and re-creation of Summer Day Camp offerings by Association Experts based on feedback, YMCA facility features and what we know we can do well.

  • Created Sample Lesson plans
  • Use our Facilities and YMCA expertise better
  • Invest in Water Polo and Underwater Hockey Equipment
