Geography of the Frontier: Northwest Nebraska & More

GEON’s 2013 Summer Institute will be held July 14-20 and is based at Chadron State College

Sponsored by the Geographic Educators of Nebraska and funded through an Improving Teacher Quality grant from the Nebraska Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education.

This professional development institute focuses on Northwest Nebraska and Southwest South Dakota. The week is packed with field studies, lectures by local experts, and lessons presented by GEON teacher consultants.

Where is this? Presentations take place at, and field trips depart from, Chadron State College. Field studies will take place in the Sandhills, the Black Hills, at Fort Robinson, on the Pine Ridge Reservation, and at other venues.

Topics? Physical geography, Geography and literature, Native Americans, Black Hills tourism, and other subjects. Many lessons will connect to Math and Reading.

Who may participate and what will it cost? This institute is open to any pre- or in-service Nebraska K-12 teacher. Free housing will be provided at Chadron State College, along with free transportation on field trips and two meals per day.

Graduate credit? Three hours of graduate credit are available through Wayne State College. Participants completing all institute requirements will also receive a $200 stipend.

What is required? Participants must take part in all activities, complete a journal, and pass a final exam. Participants will also create a new lesson/unit for use in their classroom, which they must present at a subsequent professional development event (e.g., Curriculum Days, NSCSS) attended by other teachers in order to receive the $200 stipend.

Why should you take part? Learn new teaching strategies developed to meet state/national standards. Increase your geographical and historical knowledge and skills. Housing, transportation, and two meals per day provided free.

Submitting this form does not guarantee acceptance to institute. Preference will be given to individuals with contracts to teach full time (K-12). Send completed application form to:
