4/8/09 - MSA Meeting #5 Minutes

- Sexual Ethics in Islam (Saffiyah, Noor)
- Contacted Turning Point for Female Discussion Leader. Will go through Turning Point to find Male Discussion Leader.
- First hour: What is sex? Basic health information. Gender segregated.
- Second hour: One large group, what does a healthy relationship look like?
- Slated for late April , informal space (broadway lounge, Lewis parlor)
- Will bring additional details next week about discussion leaders, discussion topics, space
- Fatimah will wait a little longer to book space until we have a date on the speakers because the informal spaces should be available anyway
- Occupation 101 (Noor)
- Professor Abu Manneh Global Lit Professor at Barnard will assist in discussion with Anidjar
- ASA will provide pizza 45 minutes before movie. Pizza available at 5:45. Event starts at 6. Movie begins at 6:30. Move ends at 8. Discussion from 8-9.
- Event in Roone with loud speakers at 10 o clock so important that we begin the movie right at 6:30.
- Provide links to crowd for ways to get involved and help out
- Greenspiration (Yusuf)
- Yusuf will ask Muzna’s contact (Faraz) for his biography
- Faraz is enthusiastic about the topic and willallow us to reach out to Haroon Moghul about his availability and interest in speaking at a Halaqa
- Event needs to be put in weekly email
- Halaqas (Yusuf, Noor)
- Discussions every night at 9pm on 12th Floor Nussbaum Prayer Room – include in emails.
- Earl Hall is available on 22nd , just need to provide speaker
- Want to discuss topic that focuses on fundamentals but also appeals to a broader population. Make sure it is a subject that draws people to attend.
- Possible ideas – Large open Q+A with social/religious speakers
- Haroon Moghul on Islam, Nationalism, Political Islam
- Souleymane Bachir on Islamic Philosophy
- Ebadur Rahman from NYU on religious topic
- Tossed around ideas from which Yusuf and Noor will decide upon and move forward.
- Yusuf/Noor will email board by Saturday an update after brainstorming and contacting speakers about possible topics. By our next meeting they will have the speaker, subject, and program confirmed.
- Relay for Life (Samiha)
- MSA raised $490 itself for Relay, Taimur Malik provided tons of free food.
- Lots of people came through and visited
- Room for improvement : Have more people at booth/stop by booth throughout the day
- Large improvement over last year’s Relay
- Spring Social (Ali)
- Ali meeting with Emilio from JJ Dining Services Friday and will get more information about providing food at the event
- Will move to May 1st after Jummah to allow more time for planning and also not to conflict with senior farewell
- Will hold around 110th street near turf fields so that we can use them, will seek park permit
- Date is now finalized. Time: after jummah, finalized.
- Senior Farewell (Sairah, Ali, Zaki)
- Going through co-sponsorships process, meeting with SGB, SGA, CCSC, ESC etc.
- Taimur and Ali Shafei asked to be in charge of entertainment, skit
- Yusuf and Samiha asked to MC event (typically freshman that do so)
- Ali is in charge of food, will most likely order from LASANI.
- Right now scheduled for 24th. Looking into May 4th for a possible move because not many people can come the 24th. Fatimah has placed request we are just waiting to hear back.
- Town Hall Meetings
- Hold town hall meeting Tuesday the 14th in Hamilton 304 from 8-9 pm to introduce amendments
- Hold vote after Jummah on Friday - best chance to catch the most people
- Will also place suggested amendments online for people to vote on the website
- Space Booking (Fatimah)
- So as to avoid confusion – new routine
- Let Fatimah know 3 weeks ahead of time when you need a space booked and those throwing the event will work directly with Fatimah to book event
- Precalendering results come in August
- Let her know if you need AV 3 weeks in advance, cancel event as soon as possible if you know it will not happen
- Will try to be followed this year to the best of our ability but certainly will be enforced in fall.
- Committees
- Yusuf has recruited Yusuf Abukar, Yasir Diab, and Sohani Khan. Amirah may also be interested for Public Affairs.
- Ali has not asked anybody yet. Will ask Sana Khalid to help out an event by event basis.
- Noor has recruited Fahmida for the Education committee as well asFarzana Umar
- Samiha has recruited Rhonda and as well as Najmuddin Gunja
- Irem will help both the Social and Community Affairs Committees.
- SGB Locker
- Application for Locker for Iftar Utensils
- Ali will apply for it in SGB office
- Jummah Schedule
- Imam Syed this week.
- Ali Yusuf and Adel will help setup this week since Sairah will not be present
- Will list khateeb for each week online for GB members
- Will create calendar with khateeb and contact numbers on google docs for board
- Bake Sale
- At Jummah not this Friday but next
- Adel Samiha Fahmida Noor will help in baking. Willask Khadeejah, Naureen also to help. Sairah and Muzna will figure out how to pay for ingredient (vouchers).
- Announce this Friday at jummah to bring money next week.
- Occupation 101 Flyering
- Everybody print 20 copies and flyer the following locations : Zaki EC, Muzna 616, Sairah Altschul, Noor Schmerhorn, Fahmida Elliot, Sadaf Lerner, Yusuf Wallach and Mudd, Adel Havermayer, Ali Claremont and Fairchild, Irem Hamilton, Fatimah Barnard Quad, Samiha John Jay.
- Constitutional Review
- Please see new proposed constitution to be released at Town Hall Tuesday and placed online afterwards
- Article 4 Section 9: Include precalendering clause to Events Coordinators duties, Include help of PCM in clause about arranging space
- Will leave Article 6 Section 1 the same after discussion of number of members in MSA
- Article 7 Section 2: Will include excessive absences as an example of neglecting responsibilities.
- Article 7 Section 3: Will change required votes to 2/3 of the board for impeachment. Also include that OCMs are non-voting members.
- Will leave elections the same for now – do another constitutional amendment if needed in spring when elections are closer.
- Leave Muslim Advisory Council and try our best to create one in coming weeks. Good idea and a good standard to be held for the organization.
