Sleep Study
For five days, you will keep a Sleep Diary, recording data on the amount and quality of your sleep and how it influences your daily schedule. This activity is designed to provide insight into your sleep habits and how it influences your daily performance.
Directions:
- You must include at least 2 nights sleep from the weekend and a minimum of 3 nights from the school week. (Weekend sleep is defined as Friday and Saturday.)
- Use handout 7.4 to record your data. (Print off from my website- see AP Psych assignments.) Print one sheet for each night of sleep.)
- Interpret your data by answering the questions listed below.
Sleep Analysis Questions- This must be typed and in paragraph form.
- Over the 4 day period, what was the average amount of time you slept per night?
Was there a significant difference between weekend and weekday sleep patterns? (Consider both amount of sleep and time period in which you slept.) Did you notice any discrepancy in how you felt during the day in response to these differences?
- Review your data from the Stanford Sleepiness Scale. (Chart at bottom of document) According to your data, at what time in the day did you consider yourself most productive? (Peak wakefulness) At what time were you least productive? (Least wakefulness)
- Each individual has their own unique circadian rhythm. Answer the following while reflecting on yours.
- Do you consider yourself a morning lark or a night owl? Does your data support your position? Explain specifically.
- What do you consider to be the optimal sleep time for you to perform at your optimal level? Is there a discrepancy between this allotted time and the average nightly hours of sleep obtained in your data? Explain.
- If there is a significant discrepancy in question B, do you honestly see any solutions to remedy this problem? Explain.
- In terms of research design, what do you consider to be the three greatest weaknesses or flaws of this study? Briefly explain each.
