Dear Lake Forest South Families,
Welcome to 2017! As we celebrate the new year, we reflect on our past accomplishments and look toward the future. An important aspect of looking toward the future is planning for continuous improvement by developing goals. Our responsibility as parents and educators is to encourage our children to set goals that inspire them to be successful in school and life. Setting goals is an important skill for children, as it encourages responsibility, self-motivation, organization and decision making. Goal setting builds life skills for future success. Goals can include improving reading skills or a behavior change, such as getting along with a sibling. In order to make a difference in 2017, think about what goals you might set with your child to ensure they remain on track for success.

Spartan Invitational Basketball Tournament
On January 21st, W.T. Chipman Middle School will host the eighth annual basketball tournament between all Lake Forest Schools. Proceeds from the event will go to the W. T. Chipman Scholarship Fund.
The tournament begins at 10:00 a.m. in the W.T. Chipman gymnasium. The cost for attending the event is $2.00 for children and $3.00 for adults. Come out and support South’s staff basketball stars. We hope to see you there!
Counselor’s Corner
Hello 2017! It has been wonderful returning from maternity leave and jumping right into classroom guidance lessons. Initially, the guidance curriculum was set for “caring” as December’s topic. However, we switched gears due to the importance of discussing bullying and effective problem solving. Kindergarten read Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns About Bullies and learned to “be brave, be bold, a teacher must be told!” First grade read the story and completed activities within Toni the Bully. This story discussed with students that sometimes those that are bullies have gone through difficult times in the past and need others to show them how to be a good friend. 2nd grade students read and completed activities within Terry’s Old Clothes. This story taught the valuable lesson of not judging someone by their outside appearance. The third grade students are beginning to learn about “Mrs. Ball’s Rule of 3” and being able to determine if an actual behavior can be defined as bullying.
This month we will continue the conversation and allow students to not only identify a bullying situation but also the type of bullying. Students will be presented the opportunity to role play as well.
We will be participating in the Great Kindness Challenge again this year. The Challenge will consist of a weeklong celebration of Kindness beginning on Monday January 23rd through January 27th. This week will consist of challenging students to complete their individual checklists, classroom activities, and spirit days. Stay tuned for more information!
Kindergarten News
Happy New Year! With the New Year upon us, we are quickly approaching the mid-way point of the school year which marks some crucial Kindergarten milestones. Here are a few skills you can help reinforce at home:
Writing: *We are becoming sentence and story writers. Please encourage your child to explore writing at home and to say and stretch out words one sound at a time.
Reading: *We are now able to blend sounds: /c/ - /a/ - /t/=cat, and segment sounds: bat= /b/ - /a/ -/t/
*We can recognize rhyme and make rhymes. You can encourage your child to do this at home by saying what rhymes with cat? bat, sat, mat, that, hat…. and silly words too: zat, lat, yat, so on….
Math: *We will be working on writing numbers through 20. The teens can be tricky! You can help with this by writing a number line with missing numbers in sequence through 20 (or higher if your child is able)
*We have learned measurement concepts and can compare the sizes of objects (Tallest, shortest, heavier, lighter, longest, etc…)
*We can now name and create all 2D (flat) shapes (circle, square, rectangle…) AND 3D (solid) shapes (cube, cone, sphere, cylinder)
You can help your child by finding these shapes in the real world. Like these examples:
