CLARION, PA. — The Don Hansen Football Gazette All-Region Committee has released the 2016 NCAA Division II All-Super Region One squad today (Jan. 13).

2016 Harlon Hill Trophy finalist Garry Brown (WR/RS – Sr. California) was named the Super Region One “Offensive Players of the Year”, while defensive end Marcus Martin (DE- Jr. Slippery Rock) was selected as the Region “Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season.”Brown was chosen as the as the “Special Teams Player of the Year”, Edinboro receiver/return specialist Ta’Nauz Gregory (Fr. – Edinboro)“Freshman of the Year” and California head coach Gary Dunn and Edinboro head coach Justin Lustig shared the Super Region One Coach of the Year honors.

Brown, the Football Gazette “Offensive Player of the Year” and “Return Specialist Player of the Year”, led California to the #1 seed in the Region, the PSAC-West title and a trip to the NCAA D-II Playoffs where the Vulcans eventually lost the Regional Title game to Shepherd. Brown grabbed 91 passes for 1,475 yards and 22 td’s. He also rushed 6 times for 55 yards and 1 td, plus returned 20 punts for 273 yards and 2 td’s, and 14 kickoffs for 416 yards and 1 td. Brown finished 7th in the Harlon Hill balloting which determines the D-II Player of the Year. He finished his career with 222 catches for 3,761 yards and 43 td’s.

Martin, the 2015 and 2016 FB Gazette Defensive Player of the Year and the 2014 Freshman of the Year, posted 18.5 tfl’s, 7 solo and 4 assisted sacks to go with 64 tackles. In 3 years he has 40.5 sacks and 66 tfl’s, all PSAC Career Records, plus 220 tackles, and he is only a junior. Within his sights are the NCAA D-II records for sacks (46.5) and tfl’s (77).

Gregory, an explosive receiver and return specialist, was named the PSAC-West “Freshman of the Year” earlier this season. Gregory latched onto 63 passes for 808 yards and 8 td’s, plus was electric in the return game. He had 12 punt returns for 140 yards and 1 td, while returning 23 kickoffs for 748 yards (32.5 avg), with 2 returns for td’s including a 96-yarder against Clarion and an 85-yarder versus Slippery Rock.

Dunn, who was also named the AFCA Regional Coach of the Year, led the Vulcans to an amazing 11-1 overall record, the PSAC-West title, the #1 ranking in the Super Region 1 regular season final poll, and a trip to the NCAA Super Region 1 Championship game before losing to Shepherd. Dunn was in his first year coaching at Cal, coming over from Duquesne where he was the offensive coordinator for the previous six campaigns. He was a four year starter at Cal and is a 1995 Cal grad.

Lustig, also a first year head coach at Edinboro, was earlier named the PSAC-West “Coach of the Year”. Lustig led the Fighting Scots to a 9-2 overall record and a 5-2 mark in the PSAC-West. The Scots were 0-11 last year, marking an outstanding turnaround season. The Scots finished ranked 7th in the final Super Region 1 Poll. He is a 1996 grad uate of nearby Cathedral Prep High and is a 2000 graduate of Bucknell University. He came to Edinboro from Ball State.

The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988. Don Hansen’s Football Gazette began selecting Division II All-Region squads in 2003.

The first-team and second-team All-Region selections advance to a national ballot from which the 2016 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America team will be named later this month.

California led the first team with 8 selections, while Shepherd had 6, and Kutztown, East Stroudsburg, New Haven, Bloomsburg, Slippery Rock and Fairmont State all had 2 each.

Shepherd led the overall team with 13 selections, California had 12, LIU-Post with 11, IUP 9, Kutztown, Fairmont State, New Haven and West Chester getting 6 and Lock Haven, Edinboro, Notre Dame, Assumption and Bowie State all with 5 selections.

Super Region 1 is compiled of universities from four conferences including the PSAC, MEC, NE10 and the CIAA. A total of 40teams and 146 players are represented on this team.
