Class objectives: The purpose of this class is to build on the basics of the French language covered in French I. We will review and add to our knowledge and understanding of French grammar, vocabulary, and culture and continue developing the four language skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. By the end of this class -- if you work hard and apply yourself -- you will build the necessary knowledge and skills to advance to French III. I also hope that you will maintain or discover an interest in foreign languages and cultures that will make you want to continue studying French (and other foreign languages!) and visit a French-speaking country one day.

Required materials:

  • Your planner. You will be expected to write down the objective of the day's lesson every day, as well as any homework or project assignments.
  • A spiral or bound notebook. You will need to take notes in your notebook each day over what we are learning. You will also write short in-class writing assignments and journal entries in your notebook.
  • A folder with loose-leaf paper where you can keep your homework, class handouts, and returned assignments.
  • A pencil or pen. Black or dark blue ink only.

Grading policy

Your grade will be calculated as follows:

Major grades* 40%

(tests, six-week exams, oral proficiency exams, projects)

Daily grades 50%

(warm-up, participation, class work, quizzes, homework)

Writing assignments10%

*You will have no less than 2 but no more than 3 major grades per six-week grading period.

Make-Up Work

  • Students shall be expected to make up assignments and tests after absences.
  • For any class missed, the teacher will assign the student make-up or alternative work based on the instructional objectives.
  • A student shall be responsible for obtaining and completing the make-up work in a satisfactory manner and within the timeframe corresponding to the number of days absent.
  • Late work is graded in the same manner in all classes at the high school level. The table below shows the percent of the earned grade that a student is awarded for late work:

Tutorials

Tutorials will be after school from 2:45 to 3:45 pm on W-Th. This time will be available for students seeking extra help with the material, make-ups, and/or re-testing.

Instructional Sequence

First six weeks: Unit 1, Ma famille et mescopains

  • Conversational objectives: describe yourself and ask about others, talk about your likes and dislikes, inquire, say when you do something
  • Grammatical objectives: use the verbsavoirand être, make adjectives agree, use the adjectives beau, nouveau, and vieux, use -er, -ir, and -re verbs, conjugate verbs like dormir

Second six weeks: Unit 2, On fait la fête

  • Conversational objectives: wish someone a good time, ask for and give advice, ask for help, ask if tasks have been done
  • Grammatical objectives: use direct object pronouns, indirect object pronouns, use the verb offrir, use the passé composé tense with avoir and with être, use negative expressions

Third six weeks: Unit 3, Faisons les courses

  • Conversational objectives: ask about food preparation, make requests, shop for groceries, ask where things are
  • Grammatical objectives: use the partitive, use the pronoun y, form questions, use the pronoun en, order object pronouns in a sentence, make contractions with à and de

f. Be on time to class

g. Have an open mind when learning

h. Refrain from eating or drinking in class without special permission.
