La Costa Canyon High School
AP Calculus AB Classroom Expectations
2010-2011
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Students will develop an understanding of the properties of limits, derivatives, integrals, linear approximations and the applications of these calculus concepts. This course will use a multi-representational approach to calculus “with concepts, results, and problems being represented graphically, numerically, analytically and verbally.” (CALCULUS, Course Description, AP Program; The College Board)
While developing their skills and abilities students will:
· demonstrate their skills in problem solving, mathematical reasoning, and mathematical communication by working in groups and individually.
· communicate mathematics and present solutions to problems both verbally and in written sentences.
· use graphing calculators as a tool to help solve problems, experiment, interpret results, and support conclusions.
ATTENDANCE:
Student attendance is the key to success. To succeed in the Calculus students must be physically present in the classroom and participate in all classroom activities. Students are expected to be in school each day. This is the first and most important requirement for a successful school experience. Punctuality and attendance are also fundamental for success in life. The attendance policy of La Costa Canyon High School is based on the fact that a significant part of a student’s experience in any given subject area is derived from discussion, participation, academic activities, and classroom peer relationships. It is important that students and parents understand that absences must be held to a minimum, absences can affect grades. We are here to help your student succeed in that respect and ask your help with the following attendance procedures.
Clearing Absences
If your student is absent for any reason at all, call the Attendance Office to excuse his/her absence within 48 hours of the absence. Written notes are also accepted, but please be aware that we will randomly call to verify notes. Notes must be dated, signed, and must include the reason for the absence. If absences have not been excused within 48 hours, the absence will be reflected as a truancy until otherwise notified and a Saturday School may be assigned. Homework
Daily assignments and homework solutions can be found on my website. Homework can be requested via voice mail or e-mail directly from the teacher. Teachers DO NOT have to allow students to make up homework, class assignments, tests, etc. if the absence is unexcused.
PUNCTUALITY:
The school tardy policy will be enforced. Additionally, upon receiving a third tardy the student will be required to serve a half hour lunch detention. The student has a one week period to serve the lunch detention. Failure to comply will result in a poor citizenship grade.
ACADEMIC HONESTY:
Honest behavior is an expectation for all students in the San Dieguito Union High School District. The purpose of this regulation is to create and maintain an ethical academic atmosphere. Students found cheating will receive a 0 score on the assignment and will receive a U in citizenship. Further consequences may apply depending upon the severity and frequency of the offense.
MATERIALS:
1. Pencil with an eraser and paper. All assignments must be completed in pencil. Assignments not completed in pencil will automatically have 20% of its point value deducted.
2. Graphing calculator. TI-83 or TI-83 Plus is recommended.
3. Binder with sections for Notes/Handouts, Homework/Classwork, Quizzes/Tests/Projects
4. Textbook CALCULUS Early Transcendentals – Sixth Edition, Stewart James; ITP, 1999
METHODS OF ASSESSMENT
1st Semester = Test / Quiz / Project = 80% Homework / Class-work = 20%
2nd Semester = Test / Quiz / Project = 65% Homework / Class-work = 20% Final Exam = 15%
TESTS: A test will be given upon the completion of each unit. Each Test may contain both multiple choice and free response questions. In addition, there may be calculator and non-calculator portions on exams. Justification of responses and solutions are required on all exams.
QUIZZES: Quizzes will be given intermittently between Chapter Tests. All quizzes will be announced and may come in several formats: individual, group, and take-home.
CLASSWORK/HOMEWORK: Completing the homework/classwork and UNDERSTANDING the classwork/homework is the key to success in this class! Classwork/homework is assigned daily and should be thoroughly attempted each day. One homework/classwork assignment will be collected each week on the last day of class of that week. Projects can/will be assigned throughout the school year. Homework and class-work assignments will be graded based upon completion and accuracy. To receive full credit on all assignments all work must be provided.
GRADE ACCESS
I will be using the Aeries Gradebook to monitor and calculate student grades. Students and parents will have access to grades at any time through the Aeries system.
MAKE-UP WORK
LATE WORK IS NOT ACCEPTED! If a student has an excused absence they have the same number of days to complete the assignment as were missed during the absence.
All students absent the day of a test will be required to take the test in class the day they return to class unless prior arrangements have been made with the teacher to take the test at an alternate time.
CLASSROOM POLICIES AND PROCDURES
1. No food, candy, or beverage except water is allowed in class. Keep all of these items in your backpack.
2. You are allowed 5 hall passes per semester. Additional hall passes are allowed but must be earned by attending a half-hour lunch detention in Mr. Griesemer’s lunchtime study hall.
3. The following items are not permitted in class and will be confiscated on sight: i-pods, cell phones, sunglasses, hand-held video games, and calculator games. These items are a distraction to the learning process. Confiscated items will be returned at the end of the school week. If an item is confiscated on a Friday then the item will be returned the following Monday. Any confiscated item may be collected by a parent at any time.
4. Not following classroom rules and regulations is representative of poor citizenship and will result in a poor
citizenship grade.
