Friends and Feelings

Kindergarten Times / September 14, 2015

Language Arts:

Our two main literature selections this week will be Corduroy and the sequel A Pocket for Corduroy by Don Freeman. In the first story, a stuffed bear is befriended by a girl named Lisa. She loves him in spite of his “not-so-perfect” apparel. Corduroy is different than the other stuffed animals because he is missing a button. This book is a great springboard to discuss our feelings and emphasize the importance of love and acceptance of our friends in our lives. We will have fun making Corduroy bears as our art project this week.

Fundations:

Cc and Aa

Students will practice printing these letters correctly. We will begin to talk about vowel sounds with short sound “a”. We will make words with the magnetic letters.

Daily 5/Reading:

The students will continue to build their stamina with reading to themselves quietly each day. We also will begin working on how to “read to someone”. Ask your student about EEKK!

Writing Workshop:

The students will continue to write in their journals. They will practice labeling some of the pictures that they draw.

Homework:

Math – p. 17-18

Review printing #1-5 and number words for our test

Printing Practice – F and N (Please encourage your child to take his/her time and print neatly with pencil. Then color the key word picture.)

Math:

We will take the Chapter 1 test on Friday. The students will be using the “office dividers” for the first time so that they can do their own work. The children will need to know how to print the numbers

0-5 and also know how to read the number words 0-5 for the test. We will begin Chapter 2 next week. It is a very short chapter that reviews the concepts of comparing numbers 0-5.

Math Vocabulary:

0 – zero 1 - one

2 - two 3 - three

4 – four 5 - five

A word about our star student:

Isaiah is five years old. He has blond hair and dark brown eyes. He lives with his Mom, Dad, and two younger brothers. When Isaiah is at home he likes to play with his blue truck and his trains. He also likes to ride his bike. His favorite food is cheesy bread sticks. When he grows up he would like to be a trash collector and drive the garbage truck.
