Clermont PTA Meeting Minutes
January 9th, 2017 Clermont Cafeteria 7:00-8:00 p.m.
In Attendance:

PTA President, Karman Reese, called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. and gave welcome remarks.
Previous Meeting Minutes
Karman asked for a motion to approved the meeting minutes for December’s meeting. Robin Christman motioned and Kathy Black seconded the motion. The December 2016 meeting minutes were approved.
Treasurer’s Report
Brendan Mulvaney, Clermont PTA Treasurer, announced that the budget is posted from August 1 2016 – January 1 2017. The first payment from Box Tops for Education was deposited today. $18,000 has been spent at the school thus far this school year. There is a $19,000 balance now for end of year field trips, along with planners and folders for next year. There will be a vote in the near future to increase the Odyssey of the Mind budget.
President’s Report
Karman Reese, PTA President, gave the President’s Report.
Odyssey of the Mind needs judges and volunteers in order for certain teams to participate. Volunteering is really easy. Judging takes 2 days training. Judges training is February 25th, and the competition is March 18th.
Karman announced that we would like to vote to change board from 2 Vice-President’s to 3, with clearer job descriptions, also to lighten the load.
A question was posed by Angela Bobich - Is there a risk that with adding more VP’s that you would not have more volunteers?
Karman’s answer - Shouldn’t pose a problem, as the list of responsibilities for each VP will be more manageable.
Karman asked for motion to approve the 2017-2018 PTA Board to consist of 3 Vice-Presidents
Kathy Black made motion and Shelby Workman made second.
All present were in favor, with 1 opposed.

Teacher Treat Days – Teacher Treat Day is coming up on February 16th. It will be announced in Happenings next week and we may hear from room parents to sign-up as well. The theme this time will be appetizers. There will be a need for volunteers and appetizers.

Running at Recess
There are two more Friday’s to sign up to volunteer for Running at Recess this month. Currently there are no volunteers signed up for these Fridays.
Spelling Bee
Classroom Spelling Bees are this week and the school wide one is on February 10th.
Parent Strategies Series
Michael Montante, Special Education Liaison, reported that this year’s first Parent Strategies meeting will be on Tuesday, January 17th. There will be different presenters than last time.
Five people have submitted questions so they have been discussed by teachers and will have robust answers prepared for that evening.
Kathy Black asked when the Book Fair is.
Answer: March 6-10th.
Real Food For Kids
Estelle Maletz, a Clermont parent, has become our Real Food for Kids advocate. She introduced Mary Porter, Program Director.
Ms. Porter spoke to the group about the Real Food for Kids Initiative
Real Food for Kids has been working in the county for 7 years. It is the local face of a very national movement. They collaborate with school communities, in advocating for access to real whole foods for every student and educating families on the benefits of healthful lifestyle choices.
Timeline:
2010 - the program was created by 2 parents at the Wolftrap Elementary PTA.
2011 –
February - A school food resolution was drafted
October - there was a public launch of RFFK at Food Day 2011, Wolftrap ES
2012
January - the FCPS school board authorized an independent assessment of FNS
May - the FCPS School Board authorized a Pilot Kitchen at Marshall HS
June - FNS indicates that 80% of additives in school lunches are removed.
October – Food Day/Feeding Academic Success Culinary Challenge 2012 takes place at Marshall HS
2013
September - Statesmen Station opens at Marshall HS, this is a food court style fresh food bar.
At the same time, a pilot program was approved to remove regular sodas from student vending machines.
October - Food Day 2013 takes place at Hollin Meadows ES
2014
March – Feeding Academic Success 2014 takes place at Falls Church HS.
FNS begins a Three-Year Implementation Plan.
May – Loudoun County establishes RFFK chapter
October - Food Day 2014 takes place at Mount Eagle ES
2015
February - Kids Cook Contest
March - RFFK becomes FCPS partner at the March Teen Taste Sense-ation 2015, Cooper MS
August – FCPS Hires NEW FNS Director
October – Food Day 2015 at Sleepy Hollow ES and Alexandria City Establishes RFFK Chapter
2016
March - Culinary Challenge and Wellness Expo 2016 takes place, Robinson SS
May – FNS Launches RFKK Salad Bars in FCPS Elementary Schools
2017
Vision Statement is established – collaborating with school communities to elevate the quality and character of school food
Projected to get 11 more salad bars in 2017
31 salad bars in 2017-2018, Clermont will be getting one
Breakfast in the classroom at 16 schools
BBQ in 3 high schools; pilot rotation in middle schools
Rotisserie pilot
Developing and delivering programs that advance literacy in nutrition and health
