How to Take a Photo with the Trimble Juno SB
Taking a photograph of the campsite you just found is the most frustrating and hardest-to-learn part of our Wilderness Inventory Field Data Collection. So, here are step by step instructions that I hope will make the process clearer.
These instructions assume that you are on the data entry page – blank rectangles that you fill with data via the keyboard or the drop-down pick lists:
- The camera is VERY SLOW. It takes a long time to record and store the photograph in the appropriate location. Please be patient. Any time you see a tumbling beach ball that means “WAIT.”
- Leave taking the photo to the very last. Fill in all the other data rectangles and make sure the Date rectangle has been checked.
- If you are collecting a campsite location, remember that you need to tap to go to Page 2 to fill in all the data rectangles and to get to the Photo_ID rectangle.
- Tap to place the black-vertical-blinking cursor into the Photo_ID rectangle.
- Tap the tab labeled “Picture” to open a blank gray screen under which “Photo_ID” is highlighted in blue.
- Turn the screen display horizontal to speed up the camera. Push the hard key on the mobile unit (not on the glass screen) that is located to the LEFT of four-way navigation button. This button has a short horizontal line on it.
- If you see a tiny tumbling beach ball that means to wait. So wait until the beach ball goes away.
- Tap the tiny camera icon to turn it blue. It is the third icon to the right of the blue highlighted Photo_ID rectangle. The glass screen will display a moving image just like a digital camera.
- If you tap the glass screen while the camera is working you will get a row of gray and black icons. These icons are to change the camera settings, which you probably don't want to do right now. Tap the middle of the glass screen again and the icons should go away.
- You are NOW ready to take the photograph. As you are holding the unit horizontally, press the hard button that is on the top right of the edge of the mobile unit. You will see a tumbling beach ball again. When the beach ball stops tumbling you should see a still photograph. If you do not get a tumbling beach ball and still photograph then you don't have a photo that is linked to your data point. Go back to step 3) above.
- Check that you have a linked photo by going back to the page with the Photo_ID rectangle on it. If you did all these steps in the right order the Photo_ID rectangle will be filled in.
- Tap the green “OK” symbol in the bottom left corner of the screen. You are done entering and saving the data on your point.
Alternatively, tap the red X symbol to delete your point so you can start over.
- Push the hard key that you pushed in step 5) above, to turn the screen display back to vertical.
